I'm a big fan of passive safety systems.  Seatbelt tensioners, increased braking pressure when braking severely.  I like parking sensors and cameras.

I like things that help me in making decisions.  I don't like things that decide for me.

I think it's my age 😅

Not at all, I agree! Things that give me more information or reduce my workload I am all for: These I feel do make things safer and are good.

Things that override my control however, these do not make things safer. I have been trained how to drive safely, and adapt to situations based on experience and judgement - I should not have to fight the car to do these things, especially when there could be situations where a split-second could be the difference avoiding or contributing to an accident.

The thing is, if they feel that the car should override the driver because the driver isn't doing things right, e.g. they are driving while tired or running people over or whatever, this is something that needs to be fixed with the driver, not the car.

The fact that people are given licences after failing 30 or 40 times, despite the fact that they clearly are not cut out to be safe or considerate drivers illustrates that the problem.

I personally think I am barely suitable to be allowed to drive, but I am easily a better driver than at least 2/3 of the drivers I see on the roads - Cars are potential murder weapons: We should not be lowering the bar of entry!

Aye you are right, a driver's licence is seen as almost a right, not something you should earn.

Honestly for me the perfect car would be a new model of the 2008 C class I had a few years back.  Loads of passive driver aids but no active tech.  Perfect.    Turned into a money pit tragically but it was lovely to drive.

Yeah, know what you mean. Maybe I'm just old :P but I miss when cars were simpler - My favourite car is still my old Mk1 D4D! Small simple car but was nimble and packed a punch, had a nice manual gearbox, great mpg, a proper sunroof and a CD player (player... player...!), and didn't keep beeping at me if e.g. I went over a lane divider to avoid parked cars!

If it wasn't for Sad Git Khan and his thrice cursed ULEZ I'd have kept it until someone made a decent EV (It's been over 10 years and I'm still waiting on you car manufacturers! Less than 4m long and 1.7m wide with 300+ miles range at 70mph! Make it happen!)

Alas we're unlikely to see such simple uncluttered cars any more - All this safety stuff is getting shoe-horned in because it's mandated by law - Even the cheap as chips Dacias are getting them so they can get type approval etc.!

(I still don't know how they can make cars that cheap with all this new gear on them!)

Some interesting comments from another forum I am on:

"

There is a stretch of road near me with a 60MPH limit, but just off to the side is the entrance of a quarry which has a 10MPH limit sign just inside there gate. Each time I pass it my car suddenly changes the displayed limit to 10MPH and then after about 200 yards it changes it back to 60MPH. I'm thankfull that the car at least does't have the ability to slam the brakes on !!

Very similar location and effect on a road drive I regularly, though the side road is a 30.

Another one is a pair of NSL signs coming out of a 40, where the black diagonal has faded completely, leaving just a,white circle, which the camera obviously can't detect, so display keeps showing 40.

Fortunately, like yours, the system in my car is "information only"."

Computers are garbage in, garbage out.

I agree, the authorities and councils etc, but their speed limit signs in peculiar places, or too far away from the highway for the camera to detect.

To be fair, they normally place them for humans with common sense to read, not idiot computers!

I have found the ACC works particularly well when we use a 'strategic highway' for the short journey into town.  Ease into lane 1, set speed at 60, the car then 'ties on' to the truck in front.  The first issue is the truck behind sees my separation distance as a waste of space and tail gates me until he thinks he can overtake and slot in ahead.

Then the vehicle in front starts to slow before pulling off.  If I do nothing the car will obediently slow as you would wish.  Unfortunately it continues to slow long after the other vehicle is no longer in your lane.  The intelligent driver behind, seeing the road is now clear, now expects you to accelerate except the system will continually slow the car before accelerating slowly.

Yeah, mine does that too. I often override it when the car in front is decelerating or accelerating and re-engage it when things settle down again, otherwise the car dawdles too much like it isn't sure what to do, which I'm sure annoys drivers behind me!

Mainly I use it during the boring bits of the drive when nothing interesting is happening, e.g. slow crawling traffic (Less so start-stop traffic!) or long boring motorway trails, where the system doesn't have to do much, just minor speed variations and no sharp turns (I find the lane tracing can't cope with more than 20-30 degrees of turn and just suddenly turns off, often with no warning!)
