alternator

eBay usually has good suppliers, just try and avoid some of the really cheap components - they're cheap for a reason!  Hand on to the old alternator (if it wasnt on exchange) and post up some pics of the regulator end.

Thanks Lubo. The regulator will be under the end cover. If you take that off you'll see it, plus the state of the brushes. Is yours a 1.3? I'll see how much regulators are. In some cases they are too expensive and not worth replacing compared with a new alternator!

thats exactly what I thought..I had it all taken apart, so had regulator in my hand, just didnt make a picture (didnt have burns or smell or any visual problems). I think a special tool is required to check regulator so hard to judge for me. Brushes seemed 40% good, bearings smooth, other parts too, just diodepack was letting juice going both ways and thats what Im assuming is the problem

Yes, you could be right.  If you can connect a voltmeter to the alternator and spin it with a drill you'll be able to check where the voltage 'leak' is.  It'll need two people though, unless you've got 6 hands!

I cant remember what the regulator on the yaris looks like, couldn't you just remove it completely for examination?  Also, was there any arcing on the commutator?

That Comm (Commutator) is so worn that it's gouged, chipped and no doubt wafer thin (the comm also has the connections for the windings what will have been compromised too) - basically scrap

Thanks for the pics.  I would use some fine grit wet and dry on the commutator so its nice a shiny and then clean it up with some contact cleaner.  From the pic the brushes look like they may have worn down and are not exerting sufficient contact and pressure on the commutator.  If they're available separately it could be worth trying new brushes, otherwise a new regulator.

Edit - just read Flash22's comments and yes the commutator is chipped - never seen one like that!  Just check the depth of copper.  If its too far gone then unfortunately it will prob be scrap.

thanks gents.

im obviously no expert, so sorry for stupid question....where is it chipped? trying to learn..first time im taking alternator apart

it looks like a chip lower comm ring on the top edge, when new the copper is between 0.8-1.5 mm thick - it has been a long while since i had an alternator apart

Pedant mode on. May I politely point out it's not a commutator, they're slip rings.

okay. lower ring top edge is a reflection of light, and copper part is more then a 1mm, would say more then 2mm, cant measure properly

never mind, I still think its a diode pack, possibly regulator, also brushes might be at end of life... this way or other, who can advise me where to buy those parts? Local alternator specialist asked about 120e for those 3 things in total

I think you're right there tom - just to extend the definition further, i believe they're referred to slip ring commutators. i think that slip rings are mainly for a/c generators with continuous power and slip ring commutators are for dc applications where there are gaps in the ring.

Lubo, you're doing pretty well! I think you should give yourself a bit more credit and the fact that you've taken it off and apart certainly demonstrates that.

Surely cant be Euro 120 for the spares?  Does eBay have anything sensible at all?  I'm sure i bought a new regulator for my vw alternator for around £30, although that was about 10 years back
