Surely there's more to a good van than just getting rid of the side windows at the back of an estate car?

Rear seats have been replaced and a bulkhead grill installed behind the front seats. Toyota have previously done similar with the Auris van (both the 3 door based first generation and the estate based second generation), Aygo van, Yaris van, etc.

Aside from that Toyota also have the Proace City available.

Well it will find a clientele in areas like London and other big cities. Since 2011 I noticed a lots of contractors were switching from normal small vans to a Priuses at the time Prius were exempt from cc and did have free parking in Westminster. Now perhaps a bit too late for that this car can replace a Vauxhall Astra van and the likes, maybe old escort van drivers too that will eventually jump into Corolla van, Toyota hybrids are priceless queuing in morning traffics on London’s entryways like A1, M1, A13 M40 and M4,  these are the places where most likely will spot some of these Corolla vans 👍

Do we know what the panels in the rear windows & tailgate are made of & more importantly are they intrusion-proof?

Otherwise theft from these could be an issue compared to something with steel.

Probably black glass as in the preceding Auris van, which was also based on the five door Touring Sport.

Toyota have confirmed on Toyota Blog that it is standard black glass - not even laminated for security.
