2021 Yaris screen delays

Anyone know why there is such a long delay on Yaris screen replacements.

I had a bird comit sucide through my windscreen which meant it was a real write off on the 16th august, I am still waiting for a replacement on the 18th Sept with a promised date of the 30th Sept for delivery, and this is by an Authorised dealer. Luckily the dealer is supplying me with a courtesy car, but I can't understand the delay?

Hi David, welcome to TOC.

The fact that it is such a new model means that there will be few glass suppliers with that pattern, even fewer stockists/wholesalers  with 1 sitting & the fact that the factory is flat out manufacturing Yaris (the new model has been extremely successful since launch) is probably eating up what production there is.

Yeah this is the downside with Toyota's manufacturing philosophy; They make just enough parts for what they need, unlike how most manufacturers did it which was to make more than they need and just have a massive stockpile, so you have to wait for the part order to go all the way to the beginning of the pipeline.

As Heidfirst says, as it's a new car it's even worse as even the 3rd party manufacturers haven't spun up production yet, as they normally operate in batches and who knows when it's the turn of the new car's batch!

It might be even worse for people like me who have the HUD - I remember early Prius-with-HUD owners having a devil of a time getting the right replacement glass as Autoglass et al didn't realize the glass was different and just fitted normal windscreens which produced a headache-inducing double-haze image on the HUD projection.

  • 3 weeks later...

Well I have my replacement screen now thanks to Toyota,  delivered and fitted on the 28/9/21 2 days earlier than promised, although it did take 5 weeks. But all thanks to Jordan Fitzhugh at Steven Eagell Tamworth who pushed it for me.

My problem now is with LV insurance who tell me that  as Toyota is not one of their prefered windscreen fitters and that fact will cost me an extra £200.00, something that I find somewhat unbelievable, I mean Toyota not a prefered fitter??????

We fight on!

It wouldn't have been Toyota who fitted your screen, but the dealer. It is quite likely that the dealer won't be LV's approved fitter. The additional excess for using a different company to fit the screen is detailed in your policy. Did you check with LV before getting the dealer to fit the new screen?

You are quite correct, however LV do not mention who their preferred windscreen suppiers are in their policy! and I assumed ( WRONGLY ) that Toyota would be a preferred dealer, and Toyota roadside services put me through to Autowindscreens ( who are preferred ) and who, when I last checked were quoting me a delivery of mid October!

I think most insurance companies have their own "Approved fitters" in the same way as they usually have "Approved bodyshops" for crash repairs. This is usually due to a discount arrangement between repairer and insurance company, and since the Toyota dealer doesn't have this arrangement with the insurance company, they will be billed for the full dealer labour rate, which the insurance company won't be happy with, and intends to bill you the difference (or more!) Most insurance companies will have this "Approved repairers" clause but they also have to allow you a choice of repairer at extra cost to yourself. Got us by the 'short & curlies' with this one I reckon, and ought to be one for the Insurance Ombudsman to sort out.

And I would suspect that the dealer will use a third party, mobile, windscreen fitter and only supply the glass?

Peter,

I never asked, I was just glad to have wheels, but another point is that sending it to Toyota meant I got a replacement car that the LV preferred dealers would not provide.

It could well be that Toyota may use a window fitting specialist, in which they probably more expensive then going direct with that specialist. I also am with LV and I know they have a relationship with Autoglass, maybe the biggest window specialist in the UK. I have used LV/Autoglass service twice, both for repairing chips in the screen. Last time was 3 years ago and cost me £10 for chip repair or £100 for screen replacement. THe chip repair was guaranteed by Autoglass, is hardly noticeable, and repaired on my drive. I didnt want the hassle of new windscreen, especially with all the technology "in the windscreen". I know your situation is different in that the windscreen had to be replaced.  Do you pay extra, approx £20, for a replacement car from LV in the case of vehicle off road for "accident" repair. I have had to use that once in 57 years of driving, and that was 2 years ago and LV and the car hire company provided very well for me.
