Gen 4 a lot km any issues?

Hello anyone who covered a lot km any issues? Gen4 . I think someone who use the Prius as a taxi can tell me I think.

Hi Loukas, can I suggest next time you see a taxi driver in a Gen4 Prius sitting in his car on the side of the road in your country, go over & ask him. This is exactly what I did & was astounded to find that the taxi driver had covered 155,000 miles, which is even higher in kilometres. Most importantly, when asked, he said other than routine wearing parts like brake pads & tyres. He’d not experienced any problems whatsoever, but he did make sure the car was serviced regularly as per the Toyota schedule.

My first Prius was a Gen3 which when I bought it had 105k miles, the last 50k miles had been covered by the seller who was a retiring taxi driver. He had no serious problems, had it service in accord with miles, and all was ok. I found it to be so.

To be honest, I not seen too many Gen4 Prius taxis, plenty Gen3 and Gen2, which tells you something. I would reckon the Gen3 and Gen2 are by now running high miles. Taxi drivers need their vehicles on the road to earn money, and will spend whatever is needed to keep them on the road, but for sure they are not stupid, they won’t keep pumping money into an unreliable car.

The engine in a Gen 4 is basically same as Gen3.

In USA plenty Prius done over 200k miles, even over 300k

Or, ask a taxi driver with a different car., someone who drives a Passat or Skoda., you can also ask how much they earn as you were thinking to joint the trade and see if he answers sensibly 😊👌

Hi,

For driving a lot there is no better option than Prius or Prius based cars like Corolla, Camry or rav4, even a Yaris hybrid will be excellent except it’s small size. The taxi driver may point you towards Hyundai/Kia hybrids, these are very good cars indeed but they does not have so advanced drive train as Prius has and in a long run they will cost more to maintain. With Prius you only need to service as per the schedule and this is often only oil and filters, sometimes Wiper Blades and spark plugs and other fluids but these are all with extended intervals. The simplicity of the Toyota hybrid technology, the ease of use and cost effective ownership are the strength points of the Prius. There is no reason to worry about reliability, this is actually why people buy these cars at first place 👍

I agree I would certainly be very interested in that information . Mind you there are loads of Prius cars being driven by taxi drivers so that must speak for itself. Joe’s post more or less sums up the situation & the fact that although most Prius taxis are earlier than the Gen4 Prius that Loukas is interested in, the technology & engines etc are more or less the same

Yes I agree . I am nearly to choose the new gen4 2018 . I used to have diesel car believe me I get tired of spending a lot of money for the service dpf injectors ect...

Hi Lok, I once bought a new top of the range diesel ford escort, many years ago. It was the only diesel I ever owned & believe me I’d never ever want to own another one.

The tyres on the front were bald after just 10,000 miles; front brake pads were so worn out all the time, they had to be replaced at every service interval; the car constantly blew plumes of black smoke, which the Ford garage never managed to cure; it was noisy; wheel bearings & gearbox bearings had to be replaced under warranty which was up to only 3 years in those days. I did just about 30,000 miles, just out of warranty & the turbo went on it as well. It cost me about £1,000 to repair, which believe me was a lot of money especially compared with values today.

The car was a complete bag of nails & easily the worse car I’ve ever had the misfortune to own. That experience contrasts with the excellent experience I have enjoyed with both the Gen3 & my present Gen4 Prius, especially the reliability & the worry free motoring I’ve enjoyed driving them.

Yes all the diesel around the same. I had mercendes all the e class economy let's say yes but maintenance you need extra salary ,😀. That will I want gen4 to save me

That’s the thing though, almost all cars can go high miles if driven carefully but at what cost? The German cars are currently the worst of all cars in that terms, they require expensive and unnecessary maintenance at short intervals. Ice cars made in Germany are no go since 2005. Things that should be avoided when looking for a high milers are : direct injection, dual clutch or automated transmission, add blue, fancy high pressure injectors, dual mass flywheel, oil filed engine mounts, run flat, low profile tyres, ceramic brakes, turbo especially more than one, adaptive suspension, turning rear axles, and Toyota Prius has non of these, ok it does have an egr  but this is unavoidable and earlier models has some issues but with just simple cleaning and you are back on the road. 👍

Two of the key issues with the Gen 3 Prius were oil consumption with high mileage, and head gasket failure probably caused by EGR valve blockages. I believe both the head gasket and pistons/piston rings were redesigned to rectify these issues during production of the Gen 3, and the Gen 4 uses the same engine. The EGR system and intake manifold were also re-designed but I don't know if this is still prone to getting clogged up.

I used to spend quite a lot of time in Cyprus and I was once chatting to a taxi driver there about his E Class Mercedes. I commented how clean the car looked despite over 250000 km on the clock. 'Yes, but it's on its second engine rebuild and third gearbox!' he said 😱

I asked how do you earn a living when it's being repaired so often? 'It's OK, I use my wife's Corolla' he replied 😆

Yeah, it makes me laugh when people talk about German car reliability... german cars haven't been reliable for a while now! :sad:

Yes but you won’t convince any of those German car drivers of that. They like we do, consider we drive the best, most  reliable cars in the world. The difference is we know with proof how reliable Toyota cars & Japanese designed/built cars are in general, whereas there is evidence that German cars are falling behind in that respect. Seeing how some German car drivers seem to drive at speed & generally seem to abuse their cars, is it any wonder they’re not so reliable. Mind you I’m obviously bias since I’ve got absolutely no intention of buying a German car, after all why should I when I’ve had the first class experience & reliability out of both the Toyota Prius cars I’ve owned!

The last good Mercedes used as taxi probably was e200d w124, and that actually is the last real Mercedes, built to last and deliver enjoyable drive. About The German car owners, yes there is something correct about them, many are nuts and simply destroying their cars., although there are also some wonderful Toyota hybrid owners especially in the taxi trade, no offence but I have seen plenty of examples for poor driving from ph drivers. Now about my last new German car , it was a vw caddy from 2004 with 2.0 naturally aspirated diesel engine, I have done 60k miles in the first year without any issues and with only normal service and brake pads change, and light bulbs. The car was really nice to drive full or empty. Other colleagues both Peugeot and Renault vans where having tons of issues and me with the Vw non. In general seems like Toyota have the best and most reliable cars to date. With the bev era now we are heading to the things may change. 👍

i drive uber in london in prius between that is a rental gen 4 2017 and it has been neglected by previous renter no service for 2 years sludge build up. so i thought i would treat it nice in my possession got toyota brand engine flush then fully toyota serviced every 6 months with V Nitro fill up at all times. Nothing has gone wrong touch wood i have had it for 2 years however i am now experiencing a slow ghost coolant leak. i have done a 143 mile shift today 1 degree celcius heating on for 3plus hours and have gotten 65mpg tbis shift cost me about 16 pounds with Shell v power at 164 per litre and have Bridgestone winter tyres all round(very noisy) . Hope this helps
