D4D 1CD-FTV timing marks?

Just done the cambelt on my other half's Verso, I watched some good and bad you tube vids and googled beforehand.

It was running terrible before (wouldnt start hot, no power, like completely flat and taking an age to get on boost+++ black smoke) so I put in a good used pump as well

When I came to time back up to marks, the crank was spot on and the pump was good, but the cam was half a tooth behind the mark, moved it a tooth and it was half a tooth past the mark - assuming the mark is the line on the casing?

So it runs and runs better than it did but I still think its lacking torque low down - should i knock the cam back a tooth (retarding the cam timing)

nobody??

Cars been back on the road - sailed the MOT emissions this time around and it runs much better, still a bit flat off idle, sure it had more off boost torque before, well maybe 100K ago...
