Prius Qi charger doesn’t support MagSafe cases on iphone13

If you want to charge your iPhone 13 wirelessly then you will need to take it out of the MagSafe case as that causes an “orange flash of doom” from the unit.

What would happen with, say, an iPhone 10, or 11, or 12

10 11 and 12 (not in a MagSafe case) work fine.
I’ve been using the Qi charger since the 8

Wireless (QI) charging relies on inductive coupling of the coils in the charger unit and the coils in the back of the phone. Both need to be reasonably well aligned and as close as possible together. Some cases add so much thickness to the back of the phone that the coupling is not good enough for the exchange of power to work. Since I don't own an iPhone, I have no idea whether this is the case for the MagSafe case/Prius charger combo or not but I suspect it will be something like that...

I had an iPhone 8 with an eBay sourced “general” case for phone protection. My Prius charger wouldn’t work, and I couldn’t be bothered takin phone out of case every time.  I since changed back to Android with a Google xl and that doesn’t have the capability of wireless charging, but no problem to me because that is in a protective case too.

Thanks for the “science” but the 13 sometimes communicates a requirement for a larger power consumption (30w) without case asked for 15w

You could have also plugged in a lightning cable lol 😂

Of course, and that is what I did.

I still use a cable with the Google xl, but the phone has a connector terminating in a magnetic piece, and the cable has a magnetic piece as well. So just like the cordless adaptor in the Prius means the connection port on the phone doesn’t wear, the magnetic connection works the same - no connector wear.  No doubt now there are Lightening magnectic connectors for Apple phones too.

Which "xl" is it Joe? I use a Pixel 3XL and that does have wireless charging (up to 30W on the right charger).

I didn’t know that Colin, maybe because when I bought it (a 3xl) I knew it was going in a case (and stay in it). It came with a fast charger mains adaptor but it’s only 18w, which is fast compared to a “standard” charger. Wife has a Xiaomi which is the same charging capacity, so that makes life easier in the house.

Pixel 3xl is only 18w over wireless charging.

My iPhone 12 with Apple silicone case with MagSafe works in Hyundai ionic wireless charger, but will try again next time . Also same iPhone 12 with spigen silicone case no MagSafe works just fine. Could be from the Prius charger itself.

Magsafe covers have magnets in them to hold the charger or Magsafe wallet securely to the cover.

Magnets being metal WILL affect the QI charger if the charging area is a large size.

Smaller QI chargers will probably sit between the magnets and allow charging.

All QI chargers advise against having any metal (magnets, credit / debit cards etc) on the back of any phone or case if charging wirelessly.

The metal can cause a short circuit causing the "orange flash of death".

So in this case iPhones with Apple or any other MagSafe cases should only be charged with Apple own MagSafe wireless charger or other MagSafe compatible charger, correct?

Agreed the spigen case works in the Prius but falls off my nightstand lol.
I have always found the charger in the 2016 and 2019 to be overly sensitive

MagSafe cases have Metal in them not magnets. The magnets are in the charger.

I think there are magnets in MagSafe Apple cases at least that what they say on their website and I can actually stick my iPhone to the fridge door with the case but not without, I mean the case has extra magnets inside.

Ok. It is really strange that a third party charger bought off t’internet charges iPhone 12/13 (both MagSafe) no probs. It must be the “don’t put your keys” on the charging pad sensitivity is the issue.
I reported the issue here for information, people had an opinion, now it’s time to put the thread to bed.
