Fuel Gauge Incorrect ?

Put a full tank of petrol in Friday 24th. And today it still shows a full tank ( all the bars are right to the top )

I drive every day for about 30 minutes on average, doing local trips around town ( no motorway driving ) and it still shows as 100% full, this cannot be right surely ?

When I got the car a couple of weeks back it had half a tank showing on the gauge  and went down by one bar every few days...

So why since getting a full tank does it still show as 100% full ? Does it need re-calibrating or something ?

Yaris SR 1.33 2008 European model

Thanks

That’s the nature of the guidelines. When full of petrol it takes a long time to start reducing bar by bar, and you will find that when it is showing half full you will not get the same mileage on the lower half of the guidelines.

The gauge, in common with some other models, operates in a non-linear way. The bars extinguish more quickly as the tank empties. Something you soon get used to.

Understood, thanks. So I shouldn't worry about it just completely running out when it says 100% then

No - the bars should start to extinguish soon.

It's a common gripe with the Yaris - I found typically I could do around a hundred miles before the first block (of 8) disappeared. It goes down a lot faster after that sadly!

To test if the bars do drop when fuel is used, rather then wait and see, what you could do is syphon some off into a 2 gallon can, check the bars, take your 2 gallon can to a petrol station queue and flog it off for a profit.  😃

First car I had I filled to 3rd click and flooded float at the top. It dried out after about 3 days where gauge went to full from empty. Not sure can do that to a modern car now. Maybe have car checked by Toyota if don't think can put more fuel in. Diagnostics should tell them how much fuel in it.

I can't remember a car I've had in 40+ years that didn't do something like this (well, except the electric one).

Supplying accurate volume displays would be expensive, so a multi-million £$ airplane will get them. Most people only care about the level when it's getting low, so ... cheap it is 🙂

It's like VW gauges really, Take ages to start going down, then it goes down quite quickly.
