2020 New Yaris Launch Edition - Rear Cross Traffic Alert with automatic braking (RCTB)

This is just a kind of "straw poll" to see if anyone who purchased the new TNGA Launch Edition Yaris during 2020 (before the slight change in 2021) has found that this "RCTB" actually works on their car?

Also, does anyone actually know the correct way to test for its functionality?

Do you have the option to turn it on/off in the menu ? P247 P94,100

if it's not fitted, the option will not be there

Edit. Looking at the August 2020 price list, the launch did have the RCTAB

Just checked through all my menu items in "Settings" and nowhere is there a screen for "RCTA"...

...and there is no mention of RCTA in any of the submenus either...

Got me wondering now...

According to the manual, it uses the same sensors as the BSM and that is functioning fine so it is strange why it doesn't appear on my menus anywhere...

Sent this to my local sales manager after having a phone conversation with him...

It'll be interesting to see the result...

I'm still waiting for others with Launch Editions bought in 2020 to appear? Anyone?

I have a 2021 Launch edition and don't see anything about RCTA in the menus. Maybe it's just passive and works in the background will have to test it.

Although My specifications and price list also said I would get red stiched seats but I didn't.

The red stitching was dropped (sadly) from the 2021 "refresh" Launch Edition. I have red stitching in my 2020 LE...

RCTA works with pedestrians doesent it ? Have you got someone who can just walk past the back of the car while your reversing ? Obviously keep an eye out so you don't hit them lol.

Yes - reverse slowly and have someone walk near the car....my other half's Yaris activated its braking when the neighbour walked out as she was reversing. Pretty sure she has not settings to adjust or turn off either.

Quick read of the manual, it's integrated into part of the BSM

Edit. See page 429, the RCTA light should self test when you turn the car on

Tried that, nothing indicated...

It's not just for pedestrians. It works with approaching vehicles as well... There is quite a detailed description in the manual of the various situations when it will work.

It is on by default and even if you turn it off, it comes back on the next time you start the car...

That is parking braking assist - different function. My corolla has that but not BSM or RCTA

The rear sensors are slightly on the side of the vehicle/bumper. If you were reversing out of a parking space and a car was approaching the sensors would start beeping. I no idea if brakes come on because once the warning beepers go off I am braking anyway.  Having said that, it is rare I have to reverse out of a parking bay, I usually reverse into a parking bay then it is easier to come out forward.

It depends on their speed as they approached, iirc it's between 5-18mph

Just an update: My dealer has listened to my reasoning about this matter and, ostensibly he fully agrees with me and so he has forwarded all my stuff to Toyota UK in an effort to clarify whether it should have had this feature or not. Of course, this paragraph on the back page of the brochure will probably be cited if not...

My apologies for not updating this. In a nutshell, it was subsequently confirmed by Toyota GB by cross checking the VIN number that my car (and car's of the same spec at that time of production) was not equipped with the Rear Cross Traffic Alert system.

Likewise with my dealer when I asked them why my launch edition didn't have the RCTA feature that I was told at point of sale by sales person it would have.... Apparently Toyota said it was an error in brochure at that time!!... I have so far drawn a blank trying to get any sort of financial compensation (have been offered opportunity to trade in for a new Excel version that has feature, at no additional deposit/increase in monthly PCP amount - meaning an extra years finance for me though 🤔).

Not sure about Excel's lighter interior & lack of the Tokio fusion red of my Launch Edition though (really love my present car's 'looks') 😪...

I think it's really bad to do that with a safety feature. People could reverse out thinking its working when it's not.

That is why they put *All prices, specifications and terms of sales are subject to change without notice

Ultra common CYA by most companies

At the end of the day, your contract is with the dealer, not the manufacturer. Any compensation would be for discussion between you and the dealer. The manufacturer may get involved on a goodwill basis, but there is no legal contract between you and the manufacturer.
