Engine warning light - CAT/Sensors

The engine warning light came on our 2012 Auris 1.33 Petrol a couple of months back, took it to our usual independent garage, came back from diagnostic that it was problem with the CAT, car running fine otherwise and was due MOT few weeks later so he said would reset the light and see how it did with emissions test on MOT. Light stayed off and passed MOT and emission test few weeks later but light has since come back on. Took it back, put it back on computer and it’s come up with the CAT and also fault with sensors this time. He said it doesn’t seem right that the CAT and both sensors have gone, it’s usually either one or the other. It’s done 73000 miles.  It does seem to use quite a lot of oil but I’ve read on here that’s common with this engine type, there’s no smoke at all, no loss of power. Car is running absolutely fine other than the warning light. I’m worried it’s something else triggering the fault codes as would it have passed it’s emissions test if there was a problem with the CAT?

Hi,

The issue is exactly that, burning oil. If the car runs otherwise ok my best advice is to use some proper additives in the fuel and take the car for a long motorway drive, 40-50 min at least continuous drive at high speeds like 60-65mph, no need to be illegally high, you can keep in lower gear for some time and also do few harder accelerations from 40-70mph while you are driving, perhaps at night time when quiet is best for that.

This cleaner works well, you can try with it first and use in max of 30ltr of fuel, best to use 99 E5 petrol for the procedure then whatever you like. If no immediate effect, you can do another go with the same additive. After a while. This thing works magic and helped me solve some issues with my cars previously.
If you want to go other way with repairs, you need to repair the engine first to stop consuming any oil then replace catalytic converter and sensors, which in my opinion makes no sense and will cost more than the car itself unless done by yourself as diy project.
Good luck 👍

I have the same oil burning issue (7 litres added since March this year... eek) but no warning lights. Most of my runs are longish and I do (and partly because of the oil problem) try and use the full rev range quite frequently, in other words taking it up to the red line on occasions. Emissions results (the print out you get) have always been super low, about as low as they could be actually.

If you do motorway driving then don't be afraid to drop it down to fourth gear for a few miles to really get it up to temperature at highish revs.
