Negotiating on new RAV4 PHEV price?

Hi,

I’m wondering if anyone has any experience of negotiating against the revised RRP. I had a PHEV RAV4 DP on order before the price drop and had secured over 5% discount plus good part ex value and protection plus pack added.

However then the new pricing came out (c10% less), and they have since passed on that new price but are refusing offer the previous discount. I’d initially asked for the same amount in ££ but would have accepted it being 5% of new price (or if they could have got close). But their stance is that “it’s less overall than you were willing to pay before” and “Toyota have taken away our negotiating margins through this revised pricing”

My argument back has been that it’s not about the overall price of what I was willing to pay but the money I lose on depreciation, which before was negated somewhat by a discount and now no longer is there.  I also stated that Toyota UK will be taking the hit on margins not expecting the individual franchises to (but I’m not sure how true that is?!)

So I’m waiting for a call back today from the manager (who had to speak to the general manager 🙄!!) but I’m curious what level of discount or extras others have secured against the new pricing? Their current offer was about £1000 off plus a free dash cam.

Does anyone know the price of the first and second service? Or a service plan?

Thanks in advance (and if you got that far with your reading!)

You can find out the cost of services by going onto the Toyota website and going partway through the motions of booking a service.

You can check the prices offered by the discounters to get a reasonable comparison. They seem to be offering around 2% discount today - which is equivalent to around £1,000 off a Dynamic Premium. On that basis, the offer you currently have from your dealer looks rather good ...

Yes unfortunately when I’ve tried (admittedly just the mobile site) it won’t progress to pricing page without me putting in registration (which I don’t yet have!) unless I’m missing something - I’ll have another try

Yes just tried again and I get the following ‘no services available for this dealer’ (and I’ve tried 4 different dealer options!)90AD6041-F448-462F-A7F1-11F4111964F8.thumb.png.8d6c7e8e93a4e888dea782a172451e77.png

Should be able to do it by selecting the model.

I got £2000 off a dynamic premium after the price drop. Try Carwow for their best discount price and shop around.

They seem to have made it much harder to discover service costs ... ! 😞

Intermediate service for mine comes up at £190; full service at £340 - I believe that the services costs of the PHEV are exactly the same but ...

Yep, that’s when I get the message above when I select a RAV4 PHEV option

Thank you, it would seem I’m not being totally unreasonable in my ask

Car dealers get different discount rates on the price they pay for the cars depending on sales volumes. I don't know how it is in the UK, but a car dealer may or may not be a wholy owned subsidiary of the manufacturer, which will also have an impact on the final negotiated price.

Then there is the state of the market, Toyota being one of few manufacturers actually boosting their market share, meaning people are turning away more and more from pure ICE vehicles. I was unable to negotiate any discount on my car on order, other than the Toyota promotional discount, which would have been less if I had ordered the next day!

At the time I placed my order Carwow best discount was around £1800. Drivethedeal (who no longer offer Toyota) was £2400 however they withdrew from Toyota before I could place my order. Nevertheless I just held my ground and given I did better than Carwow was happy. Autoebid were not offering any discounts. When I phoned them they said there weren’t any available.

Service plan costs are simply the cost of the next service due (intermediate or full) divided by 11 or 12 months. You simply pay for the service monthly in advance at today's prices and then get a discount on any unplanned parts that are required - planned service items are included in the service cost.

So my service plan covers the costs of the first year intermediate service (£190, now completed), the second year full service (£340) and the cost of Toyota Roadside Assistance for the second year (£70).

It would appear the discounts now available are much less than last month. Carwow best deal so far is only just over 2%, last month it was around 4% over and above the price drop. Unfortunately it would appear the deal you have been offered is probably as good as it now gets.

I’d not used carwow before so thanks for the tip. This would seem reasonable (3.9%) and not far from me, so I’ll use this as my comparison 😊

Ah, that is good and same as last month. I got slightly more but suspect that was in part because it was 2 days before the end of the quarter so possibly were on a target bonus.

I got my car from Carwow and saved a LOT over my local dealers.  night and day - in fact they were selling a design with 23000 2019 for £2k more than I got my excel 71 plate new

The Carwow discount can effect your trade in offer if you quote the Carwow offer to them first. With previous RAV dealer quoted a very reasonable trade in valuation. When I produced the Carwow quote, from the same dealer, he looked surprised and said if he had been aware of the Carwow quote the part exchange valuation would have been lower! Dealer agreed to the deal.

Thanks everyone. The dealer after speaking to his GM came back with £1600 off so I asked them to pop in the dual view dash cam and we agreed!

As the car is now with them it seemed like the best deal, especially as I’m still getting the decent trade in price.

What have you benchmarked your trade-in price against? I got over £4000 more than my average trade-in offer by selling privately. In fact I had only dropped £1500 in 15 months ownership.

Yes, My experience points me in that direction. My dealer offered 6.6k€ for my car, online traders are indicating 10k€+ , and just this weekend I saw a similar spec car, but no panoramic roof or automatic transmission at 13.5k€, admittedly with fewer km and more recent.

Oh it’s just an old runaround which has been used lots for train stations and work car parks. So Toyota are similar to WBAC and similar sites it has <1 month MOT (makes private tricky) so in reality saves me hassle and uncertainty for what might not amount to much more than £100!

Yes, if I was working on that kind of margin, I'd go for ease over money. Back in late 2015 when I bought my current car the dealer offered 1300€ as a trade in, way below book price, and I sold the then almost 10 year old Clio with only 125k km on the clock, privately (I had it detailed, new mats and hub caps as well, a total outlay for me of 300€) for 4300€.

This time around it's more complicated, because I lived in the big city previously and didn't need a car, but out here in the sticks it's a different story. I will have to sell the old car after taking delivery of the new one.

correct it did affect my trade in but with 113000 miles exhaust tied up with metal tie wraps, 4 corroded alloys and lots of stone chips on my diesel kuga I jumped at their £4500 v £5500 (before it went up) with what got off the car.

I quoted the 3.9% from carwow and used that as a negotiation tool. I told the dealer they had to match it. Interestingly, they had a brand new unregistered vehicle in stock that I could have bought that day but they wouldn’t discount it, however they would honour the 3.9% on a factory order.

I also used webuyanycar to fix the part ex. They offered £24.5k for my old car, which the dealer would match. They then revised the offer to £25.6k but the dealer wouldn’t stretch to that. The dealer did however offer a guarantee of £24.5k trade in against the new car when it arrives in dec/jan. I thought between that and the little bits that would be knocked off when it actually came to the trade in that was probably about right although if the car arrives early there is nothing stopping me selling my old car via them and taking £ notes to the dealer.
