2010 Yaris 1.33

Any advice on buying high mileage Yaris 1.33 from 2010? Are parts as reasonable as Mark 1? I have an old 1.0litre and am thinking about a newer model.

1.33L from 2010 (I have the Auris) can suffer from excessive oil consumption. It is a recognised known fault. In my case it runs at just over 1L per 1000 miles. You don't say what mileage it has done.

The 2010 model has 140000 on the clock but appears rust free.

If you're happy with the Mk1 I reckon you should stick with it - I had a 2009 Mk2 and it overtook my old Fiesta as the most unreliable car I've owned; I got it to replace my old Mk1 D4D (Best car evaarrr) because of this stupid ULEZ thing, but so much stuff broke on it I just refused to spend any more money on it and burned my long-saved EV fund on a Mk4.

By the time I'd gotten rid of it, the 3 major faults it'd had were gearbox failure, AC leaks and compressor fault and high oil consumption.

I might have just been especially unlucky, but that model had known gear shift issues (There is a TSB for it) and the high oil consumption is also quite common as they used less springy piston rings to reduce friction, but this means they gunk up quite easily, and in conjunction with the very thin oil used it's not too surprising it's so prone to this problem. God only knows why the AC developed so many leaks and an undiagnosable compressor fault to boot - I can only guess none of the previous owners had ever used it as it affected the MPG noticeably, and the system just rotted!

I hear the older 1.3 (As opposed to 1.33) and 1.0 are more reliable, as they use the same engines the Mk1 uses and they were designed to fit in the Mk2 and not shoehorned in like the 1.33 is (Just my assumption, as the engine layout of the 1.33 in the Mk2 makes no sense... esp. when you compare it to the other 3 engines!).

The plus points of the Mk2's is the interior is much more spacious than the Mk1, esp the back seats, and there are more closeable storage bins (It has 3 gloveboxes! 3!!! What other car has 3 glove boxes?!), but everything doesn't quite fit properly so you get weird creaks and rattles depending on how hot or cold it is. Most people agree the build quality of the Mk1 is much better than the Mk2, and I'd agree with the exception of the doors, which feel much more solid than the slightly flimsy Mk1 doors!

If you really want to replace the Mk1, I'd skip the Mk2 and look at the Mk3 instead, or maybe a hyundai i10 or i20 (Or the kia equivalent!), or something like that...

I am looking quite hard at getting a 1.3, late MK1 or early MK2, but most of the available cars on websites seem to be riddled with rust. Will keep looking and hope to get lucky. Have been amazed by my MK1 since I bought it three years ago but would like more poke for the motorways.

Yeah you have to play the long game to find a good one - It took me ages to find another good Mk1 D4D when I was hunting for a 5-door to replace the 3-door I gave to my brother!

At least with the petrol ones they are more plentiful so hopefully a bigger pool for you to find one in; The diesel ones were rare as heck and regularly poking autotrader etc. would sometimes not even have any hits!

Great car, but don't ignore the oil consumption warnings it's true and in a car this old is not economic to solve.

The 1.0 in the second generation Yaris is different to the first generation. The KR series in the second and third generation is shared with the Aygo, IQ and some Daihatsu models.

I've had this year / engine for a couple of years, my car has a similar mileage.

As previous posters have said, you must keep a very close eye on the oil level, I check it fortnightly. Other than that, all I need to do is spray clean the MAF sensor every now and then as it sometimes stutters a bit, cleaning the sensor resolves the issue for a bit.

Ah yes, you're right! Mk2 was when they switched to the 3-pot isn't it! I forgot that...
