Trouble pairing new key fob

Hi

Has anyone had any luck pairing a new fob to their car?

I have a 2003 Toyota Rav4, but the original key fob is acting a bit weird. (Not always locking, alarm going off when trying to lock/unlock the doors, and going off when I closed the petrol door) that was weird.

I bought a new key fob, and went through all the steps to pair it with my car, but it didn't work..

Any suggestions?

Thanks

If the procedure is the one involving opening and closing doors/stamping on brake/accelerator x number of times you have to get through the sequence quite quickly - I had a similar thing on my old Mk1 Yaris - The procedure for the remote central locking took about 5 attempts to get it to work, but the immobilizer took me about 20-30 attempts to get it to work!!

Also, is the key new new, or from e.g. eBay? Keys from eBay there is a chance they just won't work - I was told there is a counter on the keys and ECU and if they differ too much you basically can't code them (I'm not sure how true this is tho'! I know the key I tried to code on my first Mk1 just never worked, and I ended up getting an autolocksmith to clone the signal from my original key to an RFID chip, which I blue-tac'd to the inside of the fob   With the second Mk1 IIRC I bought the key module from Toyota and was able to successfully program the key, albeit after many many attempts as mentioned!)

TBH you might be better off getting a dealer to do it, although I'm not sure if they will do it with a customer-supplied key (May take some persuading!)

Thanks for replying. Appreciate it.

Yes, it's that procedure.. Though there was no brake stamping in the one I used.. We tried the sequence whilst  watching the youtube video. I done it about 5 times but no luck. I was getting some weird looks opening and closing the door. heh

I bought the key fob off eBay. I had the blank key cut, but there was an issue as it wouldn't turn in the ignition. When I got the car it came with 4 keys.

1 had the lock/unlock buttons
1 had a basic fob (no lock/unlock)
2 pre cut shafts

I switched one of the precut shaft with the one I had just had cut, and tried the procedure a few times again.. Still nothing. ( the bluetac mantion made me laugh.. I had done exactly the same thing.)

I'll try and find an autolocksmith.. I can't imagine the cost of going direct to toyota..

Thanks for your help!

For your car, I reckon it'll be around a couple hundred quid IIRC to get Toyota to procure and code the key; I actually spent more than that in the end trying to get the eBay special to work in my first Mk1, so the Toyota cost doesn't seem so bad to me now!!  The second time, I got the remote module, not the whole key, from Toyota (IIRC it was only like, £70 - A bargain considering the 2nd hand eBay one was £60!), and being a fresh blank I had more confidence it would work... and it did!

I have a feeling where you might be getting stuck is you may be doing the wrong procedure - There are two procedures for the key coding:

  1. The coding of the remote central locking; This involves the opening and shutting of the doors
  2. The coding of the immobilizer; This involves stamping on the brake and accelerator

It sounds like you may be doing the door remote one, which is why it isn't working...

I'll paste the procedure that someone else posted on this forum for the Mk1 Yaris way-back when (No way I'd find the original post now  )  - It's from the same era as your RAV4 so might work for yours too???

Toyota Yaris 1999-2006 remote programming instructions

1. Open the driver’s door.
2. Insert the pre-programmed working key into the ignition lock then remove it. Don’t turn the ignition on.
3. Within 40 seconds: Close and open the driver’s door twice, then
4. Insert the new key into the ignition then remove it. Don’t turn the ignition on.

5. Within 40 seconds: Close and open the driver’s door twice, then
6. Close the driver’s door, then

7. Insert the new key into the ignition and turn the ignition on then off (Once to ADD or Twice to Erase All and Add), then
8. Remove the new key, then
9. The central locking should now lock then unlock (Once or Twice).
10. Press the lock and unlock on the remote at the same time for 1.5 seconds
11. Within 3 seconds, press the lock button on the remote for 1 second.
12. The central locking should lock and unlock once.
13. If the central locking locks then unlock twice then the sequence has not been successful. Try again.
14. Open the driver’s door to complete the sequence.

Worked a treat. I now have a key that can open the car with the remote buttons but still not start it.

I then found this to re-programme the immobiliser:

Toyota Yaris 1999-2006 key programming instructions

1. Enter the car and close all of the doors.
2. Simultaneously depress and release both the brake and accelerator pedals.
3. Within five seconds, insert a working pre-programmed key into the ignition cylinder, and turn to the "on" position.
4. Within fifteen seconds of turning the ignition, depress and release the accelerator pedal five times for a primary key
5. Within twenty seconds, depress and release the brake pedal six times for a primary key.
6. Turn the ignition to the "off" position and immediately remove the key.
7. Within ten seconds of removing the key, insert the new key and turn it to the "on" position.
8. Within ten seconds, depress and release the accelerator pedal once. The security light will then flash for 60 seconds and then turn off. When the security light stops flashing the programming should be complete.
9. Start the vehicle to verify that programming was successful.

No one was more surprised than me when this worked. I now have a fully operational key.

When I did it, the security light didn't do any of the things the instructions said it would do, but as I said after repeated attempts it did work for me! (Need to do it quite quickly with an even flow/rhythm, and without hesitating, which is harder than it sounds to do accurately! Also didn't help when the neighbour came out to see why my car was rocking back and forth from me stamping on the pedals - I think she thought something else might have been going on!! )

Again, it might be a different procedure for the RAV4 so no guarantees!! But I feel the immobilizer part definitely involves pedal stamping an not door slamming!

Thank you!

I noticed on my new key that it wasn't cut quite right, there is a burr that isn't on the original, so I'll pop back to the place where I had it cut..

The instructions I tried didn't have the pre programmed key to start the procedure off.

I've printed out the instructions..

ok so a second cutting of the key made it unusable, it's in the bin..I ordered 2 new ones.. just the empty fob. Got one cut today and am waiting until tomorrow to see if it works.

I'll post an update then

Thanks for your replies!

  • 1 year later...

i've got a replacement key (from eBay, about a year ago now!) for my 2010 rav.  I've had the physical key cut at the locksmith although being keyless i guess that's not that important.

Whats the best way to go about pairing it to the car, if indeed it can be done?  The above method might not be applicable as there's no key slot.

Many thanks

There are many sets of instructions found online. Try all of them, you may be lucky and it works.

I've purchased 3 different replacement keys, (eBay and amazon) and could not make any of them work. The best I managed was for 1 key fob to open the doors and the other to start the engine.

I went directly to a local toyota dealers with my issue and they quoted me about £150 to program a new key.. At the time I didn't have that kind of money, so I left it. Eventually I managed to save that amount and contacted thme again... The price was now £230..

In the end I found a guy on facebook marketplace. He came to my house, i told him which key did what, and next thing it was done. 1 key with both functions (engine and doors).. And it cost me £75

Good luck to you..

thanks for the advice Rocatah, appreciated.  I'll certainly check with an independent and see what they advise - its shocking how much these keys cost!

best wishes
