Auto high beam too slow

Hi all.

I've noticed that the ahb on the rav is much slower to react than on the Yaris.   Is there any setting that would improve this?

Cheers

Not that I know about, it’s not brilliant and I tend not to use it. It seems both slow to dip and slow to go back to high.

I just use the good old manual controls. My previous Subaru XV was excellent so maybe I’m expecting more than I should with the RAV?

I find that it depends on the road and ambient lighting a lot. On the dark county lane it works fine, but if there are any street lights or reflective signs, then it is a bit slow.

That’s not my experience but that might be a difference in the models, although  I would not have really thought so. I just feel out of my comfort zone to be far I’ve not tried it for some time so it might be worth giving it another go.

I find the same. It was quicker on my last car but still sometimes not quick enough for my liking. At least it's easier to turn of in this car, it was buried in a menu on my last one, so it's easier to choose when it is and isn't appropriate.

I did see a setting somewhere for adjusting the light sensitivity. I didn't play with it but presumed that was for auto headlights rather than high beam. Might be worth checking.

Slightly off the original topic but still on automatic lights. My headlights appear to come on at one darkness level (indicator comes on dash) but it has to be a bit darker for the Sat Nav screen to go dark. I've never seen this on another car. Previously headlights come on and ambient lighting comes on and Sat Nav goes to dark display at the same time.

Not an issue, in fact I like it

Must agree it seems slow to react on my HEV, it was excellent on an Avensis I had about 3 years ago as it is on my wife’s Mercedes A Class.

I tend not to use it anymore.

Just been on our first long journey in the rav, 140 miles of 90% motorway and dcs.

Might be my imagination but it seemed to get better over time.

Maybe it just needs more practice?

My 2019 Focus and the missus 2020 Fiesta both did this.  I think basicallly they've all just got different sensors.

Contrary to my earlier post, I drove over the Cat & Fiddle last night, it was pitch black. The AHB worked perfectly, really responsive. Maybe it's just better the darker it is.

I think the the auto dip feature works pretty well - it dips the beam before an oncoming driver could reasonably complain and does go back to high beam until after they have passed; it could go back to main beam a bit more quickly but really doesn't leave one in the dark too long; it dips the beam when you are following another car rather than blind them via the mirrors; and it dips the beam in built-up areas. Maybe a considerate and attentive driver could do better but it beats the average fallible driver every time.

Quirks include a tendency to 'flash' oncoming cars - i.e. to go back to main beam after one car has passed only to immediately dip again as the following car approaches - a human being could do better. And for me the design to dip at low speeds is irritating - home is up an unlit single track road so I have to switch auto high beam off in order to use the main beam when going up the hill ... and then there's the Toyota switch placement feature - could do better.

But overall it works well (for me) and, of course, we don't have to use it if we don't want to ... 😉
