Hi,

Just a quick one as I am new to the group. Picked up a lovely 69 plate Corolla Design. Lovely car in every way just one thing im curious about on the seat base (the bit your bottom goes on) why are the seats designed to slope up slight nearly the back? Does anyone else find this bit slightly uncomfortable? My wife says you are not suppose to be sitting with your bottom that far back. This was the only thing ive noticed about the car. Be interested to know if anyone else noticed this at first and doesn't now.  Ive attached a photo below. Its literally only been me that has noticed this from the 4 people Ive shown the car lol!

Thanks,

Huh, I hadn't noticed either! It seems pretty trivial, but I wonder if my Mk4 Yaris has that 'feature' too... and if that's why it's making my lower back ache!

It doesn't give me any sort of back ache. Just notice the sensation of the seat being a bit higher at the back. The overall seat is very comfortable, just wondered why they did it.

Quick google looks like most toyota seats have it now. Must be a design reason

No idea... just a design thing, or maybe to reduce the chances of stuff falling into the gap maybe??

Some cars that angle can be adjusted specifically but in most Toyota cars adjusting it is done with pulling the seat base up or down, in your particular case to make the seat base more level you will need to rise it up slightly. I had only sat in higher trim GR sport Corolla and excel and their seats are very different from design and lower specs but didn’t find any issues particularly with that matter. I think all cars has that sort of angle as a safety precaution in case of frontal impact to stop body from sliding down towards dashboard. Shown here at 0:30 👍

Its the bit right at the back near the backrest, I know what your saying a bit like Anti submarine seats. This almost seems like padding for your bottom lol! Ive looked at all corollas they all have the same design for the seat base part. Just wasn't able to find any info on it.

Alright, got that 👍., perhaps it’s just a design thing or some extra cushion I have no idea. Most cars has that on the rear seats , not sure about front ones though.

This doesn't answer your question, but, I think the Corolla seats are made for Toyota (Derby) by Adient, who were known as Johnson Controls before their seat business was split off from the main company.  They make car seats worldwide.  I suspect their UK factory is in Burton On Trent, but that might just be a distribution centre.

It would make sense hat the seats were made very close to the car's assembly, which is what Nissan do in Sunderland - their seat factory is immediately outside the factory gates.  I think Adient make the seats for Nissan as well, fwiw.

It would be interesting to know what part of the seat specification is Toyota's choosing (re: the OP's seat pad query), and how much guidance Adient provide with regards to crash protection, general industry best-practice, ergonomics knowhow etc.

On the Auris, the seats definitely came from the above. So Adient were the seat contractors, but they contracted out the supply of the seat heaters to Kongsberg (who?).  It might be that the lumber adjustment is contracted out to someone else entirely, on the Auris, that part (pneumatic, so different to the Corolla?) was made in Poland, if i remember correctly, by another company.

It's a team effort!

Anything to do with Be-Ge or Grammer?

The second name sounds familiar, I have no pictures of the pump (and so any name only exists in my memory!), not least because it lives in a close-fitting grey vinyl sleeve, so there's not much to take a picture of with regards to the air pump mechanism.

If anyone is still reading this, and interested, the seat side-airbag is made by Toyoda Gosei in Japan.  I had thought it might have been one of the now-infamous Takata ones.....

When you sit on a seat, your bum has a natural curve between your back, (vertical), and your legs, (horizontal). Maybe it is a designed comfort thing to make the seat that bit comfier?  Just a thought.

Should only be a problem if you have a cute bum, sorry, acute bum😉

Whatever the reason, the angle dos'nt suit me either.   Another member changed to a Rav [post] because of seats.

Wish I had too.

Do you mean the overall angle of the seat base or just the section at the back of the seat base as per my photo?

think it is the angle of bottom squab, plus the low seat position. No wear or sag since nearly new.

I can't say I've noticed, however I made several adjustments once I'd picked up my Corolla.  I will have to have another look, but I find the seats perfectly comfortable.

I do however find the overall design to be a good look and think credit is due for the overall design.  IMHO.

I test drove a corolla

the seats are very comfortable

find it a drop too flat

id appreciate the front of the seat raised slightly to grip you better

more sporty position

better underthigh support though I’m sure you can get a cushion for it

probably poor lumbar adjustment never had a problem , set the seat when new and comfy from there on.
