Hi ,my headlight high beam has stopped working,I have no high beam flash either, but it does flash on low beam which seems odd,has anybody else had this problem?

Any advice would be very much appriciated.

Only thing it can be is the fuse (H LP HI - 7.5A ) or Stalk, do you have DRL's/Auto lights ?

Turn the stalk backwards and forwards 20 or so times through the headlight positions

H LP HI fuse is located under the bonnet in the passenger side fuse box

The IQ only has one bulb that does both dipped and main beam. A solenoid operates the movement of the beam within the headlight unit when the stalk is moved. That is why you are flashing on dipped beam (the solenoid is not working) As both headlights have this issue it is most likely a wiring issue as otherwise both solenoids would have to have packed up at the same time.

There is no solenoid in the system the bulb doesn't move, there is just a load level motor, the ground side is controlled by the ecu it just varies the voltage to the bulb via the dim relay

I stand corrected. I knew it was something odd, it's what someone told me. At least I was on the right track.

Billy Bean is correct the IQ uses a HIR2 type head light bulb which is a single filament 12v 55w bulb the head lamp has a solenoid which moves a shade within the lamp, on dipped head light the shade is in place dipping the/blocking part of the beam when full beam is active he shade is withdrawn to expose all of the beam.

And that's exactly what flash's diagram shows. The dim relay isn't in the bulb circuit, it's feeding the coils inside the assemblies. Funny that they labelled the fuse HI and the relay itself DIM, seems rather counter intuitive.

With the flash still working, the only thing I can think of, other than the stalk, of is an auto dipping failure. Does it have that feature?

When you say it flashes on low beam what do you mean, can you only hear it or can you see the beam shape changing?

The IQ is fitted with a HIR2 bulb which is a single filament 12v 55w bulb the head lamp has a solenoid which moves a shade within the lamp, on dipped head light the shade is in place dipping the/blocking part of the beam when full beam is active the shade is withdrawn to expose all of the beam there will be no change in bulb brightness just beam shape.

Try parking against a wall or similar turn on your lights then flash them you should see the beam shape alter with more light appearing in the upper beam area if this is he case your lights are working correctly.

It would be good to know if the blue high beam indicator is working on the instrument panel or not. That would confirm if the input from the stalk is working. The indicator light often comes on with the flash as well as when fully turned on.

Hi all, well ive replaced the stalk, replaced the headlamp bulbs and ive just ran a Techstream diagnostic, and still no high beam or flash and no blue high beam indicator!!the headlight relay seems to work by manualy by turning it on with techstream but turning on hi beam with techstream seem to be turning on the low beam!any advice would be most appreciated.

Many thanks again.

Do you have power and ground on control side of the dim relay ? Power for both power and control come from 7.5A H-LP HI check the fuse  socket and power both sides of the fuse, if the fuse looks good change it anyway - it may have blown on the edge or may not be able to carry the current required

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi beam now working!!,I went to renew the dim relay today as I brought 2 used ones from eBay and I noticed it was plugged in back to front with two prongs not plugged into anything!!!,I had a mechanic work on my aircon earlier in the year and he was the only person to go near any relays, so I wont be using him again. But one consolation at least ive got a shiney new stalk and two spare relays!!!!!

Many thanks to everybody for your support.

Happy new year.
