1990 Corolla 4A-F engine (carburettor, external coil) Drove fine all day, went to start it up in the morning, started easy ran for a while then just died. Had intermittent spark to cylinder one, then nothing, not even spark directly from coil. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Could be the external coil, when the engine and the coil is cold the engine will run but check if the coil gets hot, then the engine will die. Leave until both cool and if it starts up and runs and dies again then it’s usually a faulty coil.

Probably the coil like Bernard says. You can connect a 12v test light or a bulb to the LT side just to check that the power supply and the control are OK. I assume a vehicle of that vintage will have electronic ignition and the coil will usually be controlled on the earth side. If so, you can connect a test light between Battery + and coil earth. It should flicker to tell you that the coil is being fired.
