I got a call yesterday from my dealer with the following news. The current build run of the RAV is coming to an end (RX7). The next production run will be the new version of RAV 4 (RX8). Apparently all orders that are designated ‘fleet’ orders which includes Motability orders that have not been given a build date will have to be reordered!! I am a bit miffed now ho hum

Sorry for my ignorance but does RX stand for anything or is it just a random reference that Toyota created

What on  earth is going on with Toyota, ordering and deliveries seem to be in a right mess!!

You should look at other manufacturers, Volvo were even worse earlier this year. Deleting items without reducing the price, Ford and BMW similar in some markets too. Hyundai deleted some options and Peugeot had to revert to anologue instruments having just introduced digital instrument screens.

Just shows the frailty of certain supply chains, lessons will no doubt be learned by all manufacturers

I think the RX is just a designation for the current status of the model. I never thought to ask the salesperson to be fair.

They also told me that there were about 500 ‘fleet’ ravs ordered in Scotland that have basically been rejected! Currently the RAV4 has disappeared off the Motability website and my fingers are crossed it will reappear in early January when I will have to reorder one.

My gut feeling is it will be August before one is delivered to me ho hum.

They were all too negative about the impact of Covid and cancelled component orders. Then surprised when their suppliers find other customers and markets.

Playing devil’s advocate you could say, why you would sell 100’s for cars at discounts or for lease when you have a ready market willing to pay RRP for your product.

Fleet discounts adversely affect residuals. Agree with Roger. Many car hire companies are short of cars because their model of 3-6monthly fleet renewal cannot be supplied at the moment.

Ordered mine start of August with expected delivery in Nov, that then got changed to Jan. But build started end of October and I got left factory notification on 5th November, so hopefully it’s on the same boat!

So mine arrived in the UK this week and will be at the dealer by end of December, placed order end of July so essentially a 5 month wait, if that helps anyone on lead times (and that was with a two month delay)

???? Marketing strategy to not supply cars??? The 2wd versions are less complex, less electronics, less semiconductors. The Adventure has more options including the sunroof which seems to be suffering from supply issues.

I work in IT and I don't believe in semiconductors shortage. Its a lie.. We order thousands of servers full of microchips and we have no issue.. Car companies do not want to pay the premium for microchips...  They are used to getting cheap parts and selling with high profit..

They can find the supply for the front electric motor but not for the rear ??? why ?  I don't believe adding a second electric motor should extend the delivery time by 20 weeks ... I guess Toyota's profit is higher with 2wd version and they want to make sure people  order that by offering shorter delivery times. They have the opportunity to increase their profit and that's what they are doing..

The extract from an article done by Carwow in the first part of this year illustrates why the IT industry has no shortage of semi conductors:

"As everyone stopped buying cars at the start of the pandemic, orders for the chips from car manufacturers dropped suddenly. At the same time, tech firms were buying chips left, right, and centre. These include phone and laptop manufacturers, and perhaps most notably Sony with its never-ending demand for the new PlayStation 5.

When carmakers were ready to gear up production, they found themselves at the back of the queue for these microchips. Microchip factories take up to six months to re-start production of specific types of chip, leaving carmakers facing severe delays in their supply chain."

Plus storms in the US affecting factories, and a semiconductor factory fire in Japan added to the issues.

Interesting to hear about servers. We are buying our servers and laptops from HP and for the last few months it is around 4 months lead time. On another note, in September I was trying to buy new AVR Marantz NR1711 and it is out of stock everywhere, official suppliers told me that earliest expected stock is April 2022, so got SR7015. White household goods are affected as well.

I work for one of the companies that build cloud datacenters. We buy servers and had no issue. We also started buying more since Covid started. We do pay the premium though. I guess cloud companies in the front of the queue and their demand is increasing more  than ever.

So every manufacturer in the world of cars, white goods, central heating controls and so on is lieing….. yep. I suggest you talk to my brother who builds very specialist bespoke electronic control systems and machinery for clients such as crossrail and Nissan and ask him why his workshop is full of unfinished equipment. Or ask the contractor currently building me 33 houses and tells me the lead-in time for the drainage pump is 12 months. You may be a specialist in your field but appear to know nothing about manufacturing and rationing supplies.

So I also work in IT, and in October had to cancel an order for Cisco servers in favour of Dell, as Cisco lead time skyrocketed directly due to the chip shortage.

To be fair we are not a volume buyer so perhaps that was a factor.

It is unbelievable that every car manufacturer is telling the same story about shortages and at the same time trying NOT to sell cars. If they had the parts they would sell whatever they could as quickly as they could.

I am talking from my own experience and we ordered 10 billions worth of IT equipment in last year and we had no issues. The company I am working for is not even a big  player in Cloud business. We do order Cisco gear as well and we had no problem and neither with Juniper.

And for Toyota , They had the worst year and couldn't make cars .. This is the reason their production number is close to 10 million.

I would agree that most industries didn't expect the demand for 2021 as they thought Covid effect would last longer. If they didn't order their parts in timely manner, that's their planning mistake. They should be ready to pay the premium and get the parts. Where I work we build datacenters in 2 years advance and all the contracts are in place with  the supplier.

Toyota web page says 11 weeks for 2WD Rav4 models.. This is not much longer than what it was before the so-called "microchip shortage"  It seems that They can't just find  the part for the rear motor.... and US guys seem to get their car much quicker.. I guess they missed the BBC news related part shortage.

And also my friend told me about the toilet paper shortage last year and turkey shortage for this year. Be ready to stock them. Neither I believed.

Sounds like you need to offer your expertise up to Toyota. You clearly know the answers.

I think their sales department is doing great work.. More cars will be sold this year than ever. I am going out to order a turkey for Christmas now. There were news about shortage of turkeys. I am yet to finish the Toilet papers I stocked last year.

So it was you who caused all the problems with toilet paper shortages? 😊
