Keeps cutting out.

Hi, new to this forum.

I have a problem with my newly acquired 2005 Rav4 2.0 diesel. On way home from buying it the engine management light came on and cut out. After waiting 20 mins it restarted and got me home. I changed the fuel filter thinking this may be the problem. Seemed to run fine but did the same after 20 miles. I have cheapo diagnostic device and this came up with two codes both related to crankshaft sensor. Cleared these, but would not start until it stood for another 20 mins or so. This same thing has happened numerous times now and still the wait before it will restart?

I have cleaned out egr valve and made no difference. No fault codes have come up for scv or fuel rail sensor.

Any thoughts would be good. Cheers

I have come across a similar thing in Peugeots.  The crankshaft sensor, when old, becomes heat sensitive and malfunctions.  Hence the 20 minute wait for it to cool down.  The cure is a replacement.  Dead easy and cheap on the Peugeot TU5JP4.  Not sure about Toyota diesel, though.

Thanks for that. Not so easy to get at on the Rav4, but that is my next thing to try👍
