Rattling Sound When Reversing

Does anyone know what causes this? IT sounds like it's coming from the rear offside, inside the car, it's a plastic sort of rattling like when you tap your finger against the dashboard.

I did some reading and apparently it's a common faulty on the automatic version. Mine's a manual MK2

Thanks

Here's the sound...

It happens if I put my car into reverse and then lift up the clutch.

According to another forum it is the style of exhaust on the Yaris which causes it. When driving it doesn't do it, only sometimes in first

Corroded exhaust bracket holding rear exhaust shield on. Aluminium shield, steel bolt and washer - galvanic corrosion.

See son's 2012 Yaris and our 2003 Yaris.

Thanks. Is that the same as the " Heat Shield "?

If so, underneath the car it is slightly wobbly

OK thanks. Any idea why it only does it in reverse ?

Reverse puts a different stress on suspension of exhaust..

Also engine/gearbox mounts. Could be one of these isn't as good as it was when new?

Seems it mainly does it in reverse, sometimes in first at low speeds.

Sounds like it's coming from near the exhaust

Booked in with the mechanic next week so hopefully they can have a look.

Likely to be from something loose like exhaustion heat shield along the exhaust pipes somewhere. It goes more evident under specific conditions vibrations and those are usually happening when reversing with manual car, keeping revs little bit higher will stop any rattling 👌, check with your mechanics and let us know what has it been.
Good luck

Took it down to the mechanic and they said they had to " Lubricate the rubber exhaust mount "

After collecting it it seemed to have been fixed.  Today however the rattle is back but not as loud

They did say if it continues then take it back down there, maybe next time they'll replace it ?

Hm, rubber hooks and bushes usually does not need lubricating unless for water and dust displacement purposes, in your case I believe that’s does not apply. The job of these bushes is to secure the exhaust and stop vibrations going into the body/cabin. Rattling caused by them will indicate they needs replacement. What the mechanics said about heat shield, brackets etc?

They didn't mention it. I'll get it booked in again as soon as i can.

As the mounts will be old  maybe they lubed it in the hope it would make it a bit softer to absorb the vibration?

Any idea why it stopped rattling after lubricating it but now it's back ?

The rubbers are stretched the exhaust is hanging like a clanger in a bell, engine mounts could be another issue

Is it something urgent ? As my mechanic usually has a waiting list.

Think I've fixed it.

Put a tiny bit of thick lithium lubricant and a fair bit of spray silicone around two of the mounts and now the sounds gone.

Both mounts look in good condition.
