Towing with a Yaris

Do any forum members do this?  Whether it's a camping trailer, trailer tent or (very small) caravan?

When I was researching the Yaris with a view to buying one, the part of the specs I was interested in was the weight of the car and the weight of a braked trailer it could pull (theoretically).  According to the Parker's website the towing limit was 900kg.  Great, I thought, that sounds reasonably hopeful.  However since buying my Yaris and pouring over the owner's manual I can't find A) The gross train weight or B) the kerbweight of the Yaris, so I'm not much further forward really.

I'm sure most folk will know that the trailer shouldn't weigh (when fully loaded) more than 85% of the kerbweight of the towing vehicle.  or put otherwise, that the gross train weight should not be exceeded.  So  II need to know at least one of these figures before risking overloading the car.

Comments welcome!

It should be on the vin sticker on the passenger b pillar

iirc the curb weight is 1050kg, so 892kg at 85%

Thanks Bob,

Surprised no one has actually posted to say they tow using the Yaris.  My towbar is being fitted today so I shall be looking for something to hitch it to!  Maybe just a camping trailer to start with.

I have a frame tent atm, I can  get that and all  my camping gubbins in the car but it's a bit of a squash.  Eventually will be looking for a very small, low profile caravan

Maybe I can help a bit?

From the continent, non native speaker, also excuse the language inaccuracies;

2018 Yaris 1.5 CVT + Kip Kompakt kk37 caravan, 1999 edition, the pop-up roof version (google).

Curb weight 680 kg, total weight circa 850 kg, which stretches the allowed towing load to its limits.

In the past we used (far) more powerful towing cars, so we expected that this combination might struggle, especially in mountain terrain. Experience about 5000 kilometers through Europe, including secondary roads in the French alps.

On highways it is comfortable up to 95 real kilometers/hour, depending on the revs, the CVT allows to use the cruise even in hilly terrain. Higher speeds possible, the caravan is well known for its stability, though comfort-wise it then becomes less enjoyable on long journeys.

With regards to hills and mountain roads only experience up to 10-12 % inclines at the max.; no problems at all, the CVT transmission makes it very easy.

In practice the experience is exactly what the well known website ‘’Towcare.info’’ shares about the towing capacity of this Yaris with this engine.

Typo in the link to assess towing data, should be '' Towcar.info''
