thinking of getting the Corolla gr sport . There seems to be a lot of negatives such as paint chips,18inch wheels and pot holes , electrics, engine revs surging lack of power, price of 18 inch tyre . Tyre wear.  It was a great car in the past. Has the reliability gone in the newer cars . Or  is this untrue, can some of the newer car owners give me some info to help me decide, many thanks nick

I have the GR Touring Sports on 18’s and no problems at all.

There is quite a lot of road noise but I don’t find it too intrusive, not had any reliability issues but mine is only 7 months old. The only issue I have had is the rear bumper wasn’t aligned very well so this was refitted by the Toyota dealer and is now spot on. Tyres are wearing evenly and not too quickly and the cost is not an issue. My wife has a Yaris on 16’s and there is hardly any difference in tyre prices.

Really impressed with this car, can’t think of anything I’d replace it with.

I have owned mine for 3weeks now and have no complaints at all. I suppose it depends on what your used to driving, I had a GT86 on coilovers and 35 profile tyres so to me it’s like sitting in a limousine much quieter and more comfortable

Thanks I have fallen in love with the look of the car what collour is yours and did you have the 1.8 or 2.0

Firstly, Toyota are soon bringing out a true hot hatch (similar to the gr Yaris) which is expected to rival the golf gti

secondly, the gr sport doesn’t seem any worse than any other Corolla, paint is soft as typical of Toyotas and susceptible to stone chips when going right behind lorries on motorway (could be the pearl paint is better cos pearl is by nature more layers, I don’t know, you’ll have to ask if anyone has 1)

the engine is no more powerful than a regular Corolla available as a 1.8 hybrid or 2.0 hybrid, both with a cvt, and much less torque than typical German equivalents and others on the class, so whilst the 2.0’s official acceleration numbers beat the vag offerings it’s not possible in repeat situations as it is dependent on Battery state, plus the  2.0 features a revolutionary system where the fuel injection changes through the Rev band which leads to sudden surges of lower around 3-4000 revs (this has been rectified for the Corolla cross, Toyota claims)

to sum up the vehicle is no hot hatch so if you think you’re rivalling a gti or golf r this is not, imagine a golf R line instead.

regarding potholes, punctures, and ride quality, this is the old debate applicable to every single car of big alloys/rims vs small, many ppl like the look of big alloys and many feel that the car designs needs a big alloy to “fill” the arches, personally I’m not a fan of such designs but the bigger sidewall will always be more comfortable and reduce the risk of punctures and scraping the alloys.

good luck

I think paint chips are a fact of life, no paint is harder than stone. How many you get depends on your mileage, what sort of roads you did them on, speed, distance from the vehicle in front and, of course, luck!

Mine is Design trim but I have the red pearlescent paint. Both the mirror and the windscreen pillar held up very nicely through an embarrassing incident involving a parking barrier at the airport recently. No visible damage was done to the paint, only my pride! 😊

I went for a 2.0 in white, I think they look good, the black wheels suit a lighter colour in my opinion. The greys, whites and silver looks good, I really liked the obsidian blue but for me it just didn’t work with the black wheels.

Are you looking at a new one? I enquired about a 2022 model and they couldn’t give me a delivery estimate, just said sometime next year!

White is my choice second black did you try the 1.8

Ride is great on 17in wheels, tyre noise is acceptable in general.

The 2.0 is a great powertrain, and can be surprisingly quick if you have a decent state of Battery charge when you accelerate.

The paint on my Manhattan Grey TS has held up REALLY well, only a few stone chips in nearly 9,000 miles. No swirl marks (I’m careful with my washing technique). Definitely better than the Lapiz Blue on my old Golf R.

I’ve got a few rattles here & there around the dash & boot area, but you know with Toyota the real quality is the stuff you can’t see - the mechanicals! Absolutely nothing to fault there. . . I can forgive it a few rattles as every car I’ve ever owned had had a few

No, I’d driven a 1.8 Auris before but didn’t try the Corolla 1.8, I knew the 2.0 was the one for me after the test drive, sport mode with plenty of charge in the Battery gave a decent shove.

If your stuck with colour have a look on Instagram there's loads of pictures on there & videos too. Mainly American market but you get the idea tho.

Are you going for a hatchback or estate/touring sport?

Engine size depends on if your doing long motorway mileage & towing.

I got myself a Toyota Corolla Touring Sports Excel 1.8 model.

The 1.8 have a bigger boot where the 2.0 is smaller due to it has the front Battery aswell the extra hybrid batteries at the rear..

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the excellent input from you guys. I will be going for the hatch back . It seems that the normal winners in reliability  .The German brands! Newer models are no longer at the top. Toyota and Lexus /Volvo are at the top

From what I’ve read

Yeah, it's a shame and I am never sure when I first noticed it happening, but german cars have been dropping the reliability ball for a while now. Where they excel is fit and finish - I get why people still prefer them as they just feel reassuringly solid and well put together in ways my Yaris doesn't

However they tend towards being overly complicated and a PITA to work on compared to jappy cars.

German cars also nice to drive most of them and some even look good, people are indeed either dumb or very uninformed about and still keep buying them most likely based on all that. Not sure now with electric cars Germans has a second chance to get back a good reputation of been number one auto maker but competition is higher than ever with latest Korean and Chinese players., plus Americans, Tesla and Rivian are at the top position.

That's true, they do tend to tune the engine response more for feel than efficiency, although I hate their clutches (Why do they need to give them such long travel!? I'm used to having to push the pedal all the way in to fully disengage the clutch, but once the clutch is disengaged in most of the german cars I've tried there's still 4 miles of pedal travel left to the floor!).

Looks are always subjective; I find VWs and Audis just as boring to look at as Toyotas (Well, older ones anyway, before they apparently started feeding the designer mind-altering drugs for the newer ones  ), but they have kept very consistent design over time, which I can understand the appeal of.

As usual it just comes down to different priorities for people, like I have a friend who likes Fords because they're mostly easy to work on and even tho' they are a lot less reliable, it's usually things he doesn't care about or the pattern parts are more available and cheaper, whereas Toyota parts tend to be very expensive if they're not service/wear parts (I still can't get over £50 for a single plastic Yaris wheel cap!!)

And another who likes Peugeots (Why I don't know), even tho' he knows they are notoriously unreliable (He told me once he takes a multimeter with him when buying to check the electrics, and I'm like, surely if you feel the need to bring a multimeter as a matter of course then these are not cars you should buy??)

I just don't understand people!!

No it’s the 2.0 my average is 45-50 but I do a lot of short 5mile trips so the engine is on a bit warming things up. Iv noticed since owning that the hybrid seem to fair much better in traffic and slower routes for instance went round the city centre the other night and crawling around I got 62mpg

Thanks I’m really happy with it. And compared to the previous Toyota it’s nice and quiet and uses half the amount of fuel, and it’s not a complete slouch. I find it so easy and relaxing to drive, I’d deffo recommend to the OP

here’s the previous Toyota bit of one extreme to the other
