I (briefly) considered swapping my Falkens for Michelins as soon as I collected my car! The Michelins were on an offer at the time so would have cost me about £330 for the 4 which was tempting but really didn’t make economic sense to do so, I wouldn’t have got much for the Falkens even though they only had a few miles on at the time.

I’ll be sticking with my Falkens until they wear out unless I swap the car for a MY22 model!

I would expect a MY22 to come with Falkens on it too..

At the MOT garage today they were on display Falkens ecorun 310 if I remember correctly on size 205/55 R16 91V which is exactly my size and I had a look at those, they seemed to me like a good tyres but the rubber is much harder than I am use to from Michelin and Goodyear and looks also kind of different, more plastic like , or maybe they had been spray coated with something but definitely they didn’t look right to me, otherwise ratings were excellent, rain A, Efficiency B and road noise 67dB.

Take those ratings with a big pinch of salt! They're about as trustworthy as NEDC MPG figures

When I'm interested in a tyre I always hit tyrereviews.com and see the user reviews first!

I left a review for a tyre I use on tyrereviews.com, I tried to be reasonable in my assessment, but seriously, how can those user reviews really convey how good or bad a tyre is ? It's like the reviews you see on tripadvisor, some try to be reasonable, some give 5 stars to every thing, and others are just p'eed off because they couldn't get into the restaurant, hotel or whatever.

OTOH, the guy who does those tests appears to try hard to be objective whilst giving a subjective sense to what you will get.

True. The trick is when reading the reviews to pay attention to negative ones and see if they are repeating  for the same issues  and if yes then you can make your thoughts, similar applies for the positive reviews too👍 The guy from tyre reviews is a real treasure, he provides useful information, thumbs up for that👍👍, however sometimes a review left from a sensible car owners who used the tyres in question can be even more helpful since the owners would have a wider spectrum of use in different situations and for a longer time, because tyres do change properties with their age. Here on the forum we all learned that the oem Falkens are not the quietest and not the longest lasting tyres, thanks to many forum members sharing experience., that’s the best source of information about a product and it’s real world use, same for fuel efficiency, reliability etc  👌

Yeah, that's true. WRT Tripadvisor, I trawl through the negative reviews first, to see what comes up repeatedly, sometimes you even find similar comments in positive reviews. So you made a good point, thanks. I had not thought about looking in more detail into the comments, etc.

What I was thinking, is that we all have very different driving styles, I tend to leave more distance between myself and the car in front than many others on the road. I don't drive at the speed limit on the autoroute, etc. So, some would call me a PITA driver, because I am a slower driver, I've had to hit the brakes many a time because someone wanted to be in my "safety" zone. In short, I am not hard on tyres.

I have been influenced by the remarks about the oem Falkens, but since my car is a relatively unknown quantity here (CZ made Yaris, they only started production 6 weeks ago), I don't know if I'll have those tyres. In any case, the dealer is going to put on my winter tyre choice, and I'll sell the Falkens, or whatever, (maybe wait until spring, though).

I replaced my two fronts with two more Falkens. The dealer was running an offer that meant they were a good price and I've been happy enough with them. The noise level doesn't bother me and the grip seems fine.

As for driving styles I'm definitely relaxed and laid-back. I rarely use the brakes other than to stop. However I do know what the car can do I will take corners faster than most. I think I got 14k out of my previous front Falkens but I changed them at a tad under 4mm because winter was approaching.

How do you find the Primacy 4 in wet and cold, above freezing temperature (fully understand that they are summer tyres)? I had the Primacy 3 on a Leon a while back, and they were hopeless, replaced them with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 and it was night and day difference in grip and handling in same driving conditions.

I just try to read them all to get a sense of the tyre as if there are enough ratings you get a repeating theme. One thing I also try to take into account is the wheel and tyre size of the reviewer, as that can have a huge effect on the tyre performance - I first noticed this when the tyres I had was getting slated for grip levels, esp. in the wet, whereas I found them very good gripwise; It turns out most of the negative reviews were using very low-profile rubber on very wide rims vs my skinny high-profile setup. I also had it the other way when a different tyre was praised for durability whereas I found they were wearing out very quickly; Again, down to big differences in tyre width!

I went to the dealer's this afternoon, always well received - very good coffee (espresso/short black), to finalise some details on my new car and drop of my all season/Winter tyre choice. They had a glorious array of All Season and Winter tyres in the showroom - they didn't have that in August!

Anyway, looking for the easy way to recoup the cost of the "redundant" summer tyres, I asked if he'd, effectively, buy them from me. Short answer "No", then he went on to explain, because of the winter tyre mandate here (01/11 - 31/03), They have a monster stock of summer tyres that nobody wants to touch, he also said he didn't like the 17" rims on the Yaris, he should tell that to Toyota France.

The mandate has completely transformed the tyre buying habits, around here!

I hadn't thunk of that!

Hah, that reminds me of someone who'd always try to buy their jumpers in summer and bikinis in winter as they could get massive discounts

I'm never sure how things work in countries where winter tyres are mandated by law - When a friend in Norway bought a car (2nd hand) I was very impressed as it came with 8 rims for the summer and winter set and for a while I thought that was normal over there!

I've never bought a bikini in winter unless I was going to the other hemisphere 😄.

The winter tyre mandate is new for this year, and there will be no fines, this year, for non compliance. Originally I was going to switch the tyres from the 208 to the Yaris, because they have the same rim size, and then I thought about some steel rims for winter - they are more durable, before settling on premium All Season Winter (3PMSF) tyres. You can have 8 TPWS devices registered in two sets on the Yaris, but I reckoned I could get the tyres rotated once a year during service, and that would be the best way of doing things.

They seem pretty good but I’m not a press on type driver, especially in the cold and wet. The car feels secure enough but then it did on the Falkens really.
