Any ideas if the images are mockups or the actual car?

It literally just looks like a Yaris with a Mazda Badge stuck on it

I thought they'd Mazda-fy it a bit or something...!

Similar to what Daihatsu did when they sold the second generation Yaris as the Charade.

Not too different treatment to the Suzuki Swace version of the Corolla Touring Sport.

I wish all manufacturers would stick to their own engines and no sharing of parts. If I want a BMW I'd buy a BMW etc. If Subaru, same

Volvo is same, even before Ford's take over. Diesel 2,7, 9 series VW D24. V6 PSA. Ford diesels etc. Volvo 340 1.4 and 1.7 Renault engines. For me it waters down a brands reliability.

Depends whether they can afford to develop new cars, engines, etc. Sharing engines, and parts reduces their costs, etc.

The Mazda is a niche player in Europe, and sharing the Yaris makes monetary sense, plus it would help them reduce their EU fleet CO2 target. The same with Suzuki's clones of the Corolla and Rav4.

Toyota used to sell a clone of the Mazda 2 as a Yaris in the US and Canada.

Volvo now use their own range of engines - which are also used by their parent company, Geely, and Lynk & Co. Their engine development has now been merged with Geely's.

Sharing tech has become big business, Toyota shared Hybrid technology with BMW in return for the BMW diesel engines in some models, saves them money to develop something that is readily available

That’s interesting, what hybrid tech did they shared? If there is bmw available with the same or similar drive train as Toyota, then I am interested. 🏁🏎👌

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately the only real product that I am aware of that collaboration is the latest supra from Toyota which everyone knows it’s based on BMW Z4 and shares a lots of major components and built in the same factory, but other than that bmw hasn’t offer a new 3 series with Camry drive train for example, that is what I am about a luxury sport saloon with bulletproof drivetrain and not like BMWs crap cars that can’t even last 100k miles without spend £0000’s for maintenance and repairs. Car companies are working in collaboration since the late 60’s 70’s. 👍 The thing is that Yaris is successful model and sells like cake where Mazda will be just as fulfilling a niche similar to Suzuki models that are actually rebranded Toyotas. More choice for clients better for them.

Ha! Yes! I remember seeing one for the first time and being very confused

It depends - I know I was very glad when Ford started using Mazda engines - They shot up the reliability tables! Shame they started trying to make their own again...

Wasn't the i8 made using Toyota hybrid tech? They didn't use the HSD, but I was under the impression they built the EV part using some Toyota research...?

1.5 Turbo Petrol ?   I fear that there's a mistake.

You have to bear in mind these are the same journalists that talk about the belts and cones in the Yaris CVT gearbox

Wonder if it’ll be cheaper to buy than the Yaris?

Mazda also used Ford engines - those in the petrol European market Mazda 2 (2003 to 2007) were the same units used in the Fiesta and Fusion. The diesel used the PSA 1.4 diesel. In fact the European market Mazda 2 of this era was built by Ford in Valencia, Spain, on the Fiesta/Fusion production line.

Yeah, they started off like that IIRC but changed their minds quick when the Mazda's reliability started to tank as I recall

Could you imagine how much more cars would cost? Sharing parts and designs ultimately reduces cost, and makes it easier to get parts too.

We had a 2007 petrol Mazda 2 (Ford engined and built) for 4.5 years - one fault which was an ignition pack replaced under warranty.  Reliability wise it was fine. Only issue were the 16 inch 45 profile tyres which gave a hard ride.

Apart from that one fault, as reliable as the Mazda 323 and Premacy we had from new just before.

I’m open to correct, but didn’t the earliest Yaris have a Daihatsu engine in it ??. Or is my memory playing tricks on me??🤔

The engines in the original Yaris were joint Daihatsu/Toyota designs. The later KR series engine (3 cylinder 1.0 litre), found in the Aygo/C1/107/108, Yaris/Vitz, IQ, Passo, Daihatsu Cuore/Boon/Sirion/Justy, Perodua Myvi, etc, and the forthcoming 2022 Aygo X, is a Daihatsu design.

Thanks Frosty, the old memory is not entirely gone yet!.👍

Yup, the MK1's 1.0 was all Toyota, but the 3-pot in the Mk2 onward was Daihatsu. A surprisingly good engine too!

Agreed. I had one for only a few months. It was decent, but my best mate has neck problems and the ride quality left her in agony after anything resembling a long trip. A shame, it was ok in other regards.

It did have the slippiest ever carpet in the boot though, and no bag hooks. So spilt and crushed shopping was a regular occurance.

I wonder if true, they will build a non hybrid version. I think Toyota are missing out in this respect. Not everybody is prepared to spend the extra for a hybrid when their mileage does not justify it. I know I would go for it.

Toyota does make non hybrid versions of the Yaris, they are just not for sale in the UK. In France, for example, you can get the same engine as in the hybrid, with 120bhp, 6 speed manual. At the same trim level it’s about £2k less than the hybrid. You can also by for a few hundred pounds less a 1 litre version.
