Mk3 hybrid heater

In colder weather hybrids does not keep ice temperatures very high, newer models has active grill that might be helping a bit, the previous generation without active grill tend to run colder in town driving because the ice doesn’t gets enough load, if you drive on motorways then there is no problem. If you require extra heating in the cabin just increase the set temperature and the ice will run more often and you can get more heat . I keep mine set at 22C° most of the year with some variations a degree up or down and everything works fine. Blower set to windshield and feet in winter and in summer set towards feet and middle of the dashboard, forgot to mention, you can check your cabin filter too as dealers usually doesn’t change these with regular service. 👍

Mine's usually at 22 too, but I did put it up to 24 or 25 the other day when it was freezing outside ... to no apparent effect.

The engine usually runs about 1/4 up from cold on the gauge which obviously isn't really hot enough.

Today I was doing a bit more than usual, still round town, and it did eventually get to about mid-gauge. It was just about warm enough then ... but that was with an OAT around 6C, which isn't really that cold. Hence my posting this.

6°C is not that cold, but if it's humid and there's no sun to speak of, it's chilly enough.

Automatic climate controls do act strange sometimes, it might be because although they are smart they are not as smart as humans and can easily trick themselves by the information provided from the sensors. If there is a sun ☀️ and the sun can see your dashboard can heat up your dusk and temperature sensors and they will send information that is not entirely true to the hvac ecu and ecu will lower the temperature of the climate control even though it’s not yet 22c° inside the car, this event has happened to me in all cars that have this automatic climate controls. Another reason for lost of heat in cold weather can be stuck open thermostat, if this is the case coolant is always circulating through the main radiator and gets cooled down by the air stream and you loose heat in the cabin, this you can check when you drive on the motorway and accelerate over 60-70+mph and the temperature gauge goes from middle to down and the engine is under load, if you are going downhill it’s normal but on level or uphill temperature should be consistent at middle. 👌

Sooo... on the way home I think I have discovered why my one takes so long to heat up - I normally drive around in ECO mode, and yes it is partly because the engine doesn't get many opportunities to warm up, but it also turns out that putting the drivetrain in ECO mode also puts the HVAC system into ECO mode!!!

I will have to try putting it into not-Eco mode and see if that makes a difference...!

You are right about that, I forgot to mention it probably because I haven’t use eco mode for over 3 years now and don’t missed at all.  I only drive in Normal mode, much better for everything. 👌

I think on most cars ECO mode is more about making the driver feel he, and by extension the car company, is doing his/their bit to save the planet.

As to feeling comfortable ...

ECO mode means the car is a lot more likely to shut the engine off at 40c water temp or above.

Out of ECO, it’ll spend a lot more time warming the engine up first.

Pottering around town, it can be a bit of a mixed bag as to whether it cools down too much in ECO, as when it drops beyond a certain level, it’ll fire up until the coolant is about 10c warmer.

I’ve found that pressing on a bit when it’s cold pays off as the engine warms up noticeably faster.

Yeah, normally my 'enthusiastic' driving style helps, but the morning traffic has made that a lot harder lately! The number of small roadworks popping up around here are just ridiculous, and for some reason the number of car accidents has been rising noticeably lately!

It's exacerbated by the local councils, who seem determined to make traffic as bad as possible with all these narrowed lanes and blocking off side streets (Or not blocking them off and fining you if you drive down them... Must be a nice little earner for them )

And khan seems like has a new idea to introduce a new commuter charge of £5.50 entering inside M25 .

Ugh, yeah, and extend the ULEZ up to the M25 too, you wait... If I wasn't tied here for work I'd be out of here in a heartbeat. This place is just going down the toilet. I can't believe people voted that idiot back in, he's going to destroy London. He seems to think goods arrive here by magic carpet or something.

I almost hope haulage companies and tradesmen will band together and levy an extra charge or just plain refuse to come here so that when the gormless morons that live here can't get their water and electrics fixed or their morning paninis and coffee they will finally wake up from their dream world and stop trying to bite the hand that literally feeds them.

I'm all for improving the air quality in London as it ain't great, esp. in summer, but nothing they have done has been to improve it, just make more money. If anything, almost everything they have done has made the pollution worse, and I notice diesel taxis and buses have been made exempt from ULEZ charges, so what's the point when esp. busses are the main source of the NOx and particulates KHAAAN! was supposedly trying to combat?

One bit of schadenfreude that made me very happy is the idiot mayor is now facing a large budget shortfall because we've been able to spread the word about the ULEZ better than I thought, and despite the disgracefully poor signage for it, enough people know about it that the greedy smegheads haven't made anywhere near as much money from fines as they'd planned for

If it truly was about the environment you'd think he'd be happy that so many 'polluting cars' are not coming into the zone, but instead he's blaming us drivers for avoiding the zone or getting compliant cars, for the financial shortfall

I'm sooooo glad the wife's car hasn't got climate control like her last one, can now turn the knob to red car gets luvly and toasty fairly quick plus we can have it wafting warm air on the screen without the aircon.
