Yaris 2002 speedometer problem, stuck at 0mph

Hi all.

Yaris 2002 1.0 L French build. Got a problem with the digital speedometer. First noticed that the speed displayed was too high and sometimes erratic and now it's just stuck at 0 mph. Odometer is also stuck at the same mileage. No check engine lights, no fault codes showing on using a scanner app. Scanner app dash reading for mph is also incorrect, matching the speedometer. Took out speedo, cleaned contacts, jigged it about...didn't help.

Where could the problem be? If speed sensor is fault there would be a fault code? Guy at garage says issues with speedometer are always usually due to a fault with the unit itself.

Any advice appreciated.
