Noisy wiper blades - Problem solved

Recommended Posts

Does anyone else find the Wiper Blades noisy on the C-HR? I did note that on the demo car we drove they were quite noisy. Ours is 2021 and less than 6 months old with under 3000 miles on the clock so no real wear. Screen is clean and I’ve given the blades a good wash. I’ve generally fitted Bosch blades when it comes to replacement and they have always been silent.

The ones that came with my Mk4 Yaris have been very quiet, no squealing, just the sound of them sliding over the windscreen. However they've started... not smearing in the way I think, but leaving a film of water I cant see through that takes a second to evaporate, esp. in light rain.

Have already switched back to my traditional PIAA wipers - Just need to lay down some layers of silicone so I get that lovely hydrophobic effect; Shouldn't be too long with all the rain we're being forecast!!

Should have said the wipers are clearing the screen ok , it’s just that they are quite noisy

So what make of Wiper Blades are now on?  Have you replaced them for your favoured Bosch and they noisy, is that your grump.?

Squeaky noisy?

Also there are some idiots saying to use WD40 to make Wiper Blades quiet - Do not do this!!

Noise from wipers comes from vibrations, vibrations are as a result of friction and higher friction occurs when wiper rubbers lost their graphite coating and or when the screen becomes ultra clean (like after a heavy rain) so rubber blades can not longer slide smoothly. Two possible options to use higher concentrate washer fluid and spray more often or wait or reduce cleaning intervals , drive behind lorries and they will spray extra dirt on your windshield and wipers will become quieter again(last one better not😅). You can clean wipers with wet wipes or washing mitt when cleaning your car but best not to squeeze tight on the side of the rubber, you need clean only the very top edge of the blade itself to cut through water and leave no residual lines. 👍 I usually count the noise as a reminder for new sets, and shortly after  I usually replace them, once or twice a year but I do drive a bit more. 😉👌

Not sure what  make the Wiper Blades are, they are the original one supplied with the car  , so whatever Toyota were fitting as OEM when it was built around March this year.

If the car was 12 months old with a decent milage on it  I’d be expecting to change blades but it’s only 5 months and less than 3k. To be fair the wipers have been noisy from virtually new but it’s only recently when driving more in rain that  it’s particularly noticeable.

I think they use denso wipers made in Japan. My previous Priuses including current Auris all had Denso as oem when new. I have been using Hella, Michelin and Bosch and tbh all of these and the Denso are been equally high quality wipers, and they all start to been noise at some time, some sooner than others. Have you wash your car yourself or using car washes? Sometimes car washes especially the cheap ones are spraying the cars with some sort of wax before drying with towels and that thing does nothing but destroys the wiper performance and make all sorts of wiper issues.

I’ve only washed it myself with Maguires car shampoo , rinsed and wiped dry with microfibre cloth.

I remember a video by carcarenut where he said the OEM wipers are really good, although very expensive to buy as a complete replacement. He recommends keeping them and buying the refills for them when they wear out. Just goes to show, YMMV as they say. Haven't noticed any issues with mine yet, either with dragging or squeaking as they change direction.

You can buy Denso wipers from other places like eBay or Amazon or carparts4less with discount codes they come cheap as Bosch for example, I had a brand new set in stock waiting for my next change, they did come around £26 all three wipers. , I think got them from here https://www.carparts4less.co.uk

Clean the blade and glass with a proper glass cleaner, AG fast glass works well

clay bar on the glass may help

I will say the salt on the roads recently can also cause noisy wipers, been driving in between the gritters and my wipers start squealing and they are not very old at all, plus they are Bosch classic, one of my favourite.

You shouldn’t, a least not automatically 🙂, he is a walking Google about cars in general as he has a really good experience, he might not be always correct but there is a lot to learn from. I respect him and had learned a lot from him through the years. 👌👍

I still don't get why people think that about him - Maybe he was in earlier videos that I missed or something, but every time I've looked at one of his videos it's been extremely misleading or click-bait, or both. I don't even bother clicking on them now as every time I saw one with a title that interested me, it turned out to be about something completely different or was basically common sense!

There are many channels that I rate much more highly so don't really feel I am missing anything...

Anybody who holds a bottle up in front of a camera and says, this is the best thing since sliced bread, has obviously been paid to say it.

Yes he did put up lots of good tips in the older videos but it's purely clickbait these days, as you say. He's also very rough & ready, one of his older guides showed how to replace a section of brake pipe using just compression fittings - no flares! You have to be careful how closely you follow the advice of such a person 🤠

I fitted a pair of Bosch Aerotwin blades , part number A 157 S , and as I anticipated the noise has completely gone. From day 1 the wipers were effective but noisy on both our car and the demo car we drove so not a wear issue. I know the guys with the GR Yaris have worse problems as their OEM wipers are pretty dire.

This is the fourth car I’ve used Bosch AeroTwin on and they all work perfectly , I’m sure other brands do too , and I’m not on commission from Bosch , just happy to share a fix that works. 👍

These are good indeed. I also use their classic ones too and they perform exceptionally well. 👍

I should have also said the wiper blade fitting on the C-HR is very easy to change 👍

First thing i did to the yaris when i got it was change the blades to Aerotwin, one thing i have changed the last few years is the screen wash ratio i use (AG ultimate screenwash) i did change the front blade in December (just under 3 years) the blade has some life still left but changed it out of habit more than anything else

Scotty Kilmer is an old hack - some of his advice is downright deadly, like putting compression fittings on brake lines
