Dashcam hardwiring in Mk4 Yaris Hybrid

I'm planning on installing a Dashcam in my Yaris, and I'd like to hardwire it to have less USB cables dangling around. Not planning on having parking mode enabled since that would certainly drain the already tiny 12V Battery.

These are the products I'm looking at:

https://www.viofo.com/en/dash-cam/208-318-a139-2ch-dual-channel-dash-cam-front-2k-1440p-rear-1080p-5ghz-wi-fi-gps-dash-camera.html#/45-memory_card-no_card

https://www.viofo.com/en/accessories/211-type-c-hk3-c-hardwire-kit-cable-for-a139-2ch3ch-dash-camera.html

https://www.viofo.com/en/accessories/84-viofo-4pcs-2-packs-circuit-fuse-tap-with-atc-ats-micro2-mini-adapter-holder.html

Basically, I'd need to tap into the fuse box, find the 12V socket fuse, and route the cable behind the A pillar and next to the rear view mirror. Also, along the roof towards the rear brake light on the boot door since it has a back facing camera as well.

The local dealership seems a bit stumped with what I'd like, yet I'd like them to do it to preserve the warranty, and to have the cables routed properly. EG, behind the airbags in the frame, not in front.

Is it even possible to route the cables since the fuse box is under the hood?

Yes it’s possible to hard wire a front and rear dash cams. I had Halfrauds do it on my 2019 Yaris Hybrid and had the dealership transfer it to the Mark 4 2021 Yaris Hybrid. The cams are Nextbase. I think they wired it from a fuse behind the glovebox.

My dealers were useless at sorting out the Dashcam when I asked them to put in my Viofo A129 - Claimed they couldn't run the cabling to the rear without charging me an extra £50 on what they'd quoted because there was a one-use plastic trim that would need to be replaced. And two weeks to arrive.

Ended up doing it myself - The front one is very easy; The fuse box is under the passenger part of the dashboard - There is a flimsy black plastic cover which needs to be removed (It's just held in loosely with some clips), which reveals the interior fusebox. You can tap one of the fuses, e.g. the lighter socket fuse, with your piggy back. However, you won't be able to put the fuse lid back on so you'll have to cable-tie/tape it somewhere safe. I didn't like that, and instead decided to make my life 3 times harder by running it directly into the cigarette lighter socket like I had in all my previous Yarisesiuesus, which required removing lots of dash pieces to get at the 12v socket plug (Scary if you don't know what you're doing, but flash22 provided a very very helpful guide from Toyota which made it a lot easier!)

From there it's a simple matter to run the 5v USB cable up the passenger-side door in the weatherstripping rubber, then round and up the A-pillar, into the handy gap in the headlining to where you want to stick the Dashcam. Most people keep it on the passenger-side of the mirror, which is easier, but I like being able to poke the controls so I had to route it round the massive sensors unit that the mirror is attached to.

The rear camera is harder; Some run the cable under the doors, some run it over the top. I was going to poke it through the headlining with the extendable pokey stick we use for network cabling, but due to a fault in the A129 (Would crash on bootup in hot sun) I returned it and got more proven and reliable A119v3 instead and never actually tried to run the cable.

This video is for a Mk2, but the principles are the same:

I’ve hard-wired my wife’s Mk3. I’ve used fuse box under glovebox and just keep lid in glovebox for fuse position reference.

Splicing into existing wiring is the best option, but, reluctant to do it whilst under warranty. I also don’t bother with rear Dashcam - if someone smacks you up the rear ( 🙄), it’s normally their fault.

I can only relate to my Mk 3 , non hybrid.

As others have indicated, I used a piggyback in the "CIG" ignition switched fuse (15A) position (no. 15 in mine). Fusebox behind glovebox. Blackvue 2 channel, front and rear.

As Adam, I keep the fusebox cover in the glovebox for reference, if needed. Cover will not refit using a piggyback jobby.

The cables will hide behind and across the top of the A pillar trim without affecting the airbags

It's the same setup as the mk3 so very simple, if a Halfords employee can do it must be simple

🤣😂, It cost Halfords €150, because they broke a clip which resulted in water leaking into the boot. Went

to my Toyota dealership re the water leak and they discovered Halfords f—- up. And had to put in a new wiring loom on the tailgate. I then took the bill for the repair to Halfords and they paid me €150. They said “that’s why we have insurance”. I will never ask them to do anything again. As I said in another post on this forum I wouldn’t ask them to oil the wheel on my wheelbarrow 😝🤣.

I'm astonished that a) Toyota only charged you 150 to fix it and b) Halfords actually coughed up the compensation!!!

I was a bit surprised myself. However my Toyota dealership provided me with the paid invoice and an accompanying letter stating the cause of the leak without actually accusing them of causing the problem. The Halfords guy took the letter, made a phone call and came back and directed the girl on the till to pay me in cash €150. He apologized and said “that’s what we have insurance for”. That’s the last time I was or will be in Halfords. My Toyota dealership is a family run business with two garages in Donegal and they are decent people with a great customer service history.

Although I didn’t buy my mark 4 Yaris off them, because they weren’t talking the right numbers and I saved €1500 by buying elsewhere.

Why ?
I can understand not having Halfords doing work on the car, but, honestly, Halfords have behaved very reasonably and immediately (and with minimum fuss) refunded you. Not using them for accessories etc. seems like ‘cutting your nose off ….’.

Well, your “decent, family owned” dealership might one day disappear if everyone treats them the same !
I wonder how you would feel if they had refused to touch the car and told you to either take it back to Halfords or the ‘cheaper’ dealer who supplied ?

It wasn’t the first issue I had with Halfords. I originally bought the front and rear dash cams which were the Halfords own brand. They hard wired both and charged me €60 extra for doing so. The front camera lasted a couple of months and went blank as it was under warranty I went back to them and they replaced it but wouldn’t extend the warranty. The replacement lasted a fortnight and I asked for my money back or a change of make of the cams. They took the latter option and rewired a pair of Nextbase cams, this is where their technicians caused the water leak. So after they rightfully refunded my €150 I’ve had enough. I’d travelled 180 miles wasted seven hours of my precious time, which at my time of life is getting even more precious, I’ve vowed never to darken their door again.

In regards to the dealership I was a loyal customer for many many years and bought numerous new cars there, but €1500 is better in my pocket than in theirs and had taken my loyalty for granted.
