Rear bumper panel separation

Hello,

Recently bought a 2017 Yaris. Accidentally bumped my garage door quite hard and since then noticed separation on the rear bumper panels. There is no denting or even scratches on the bumper. The only noticeable thing is the gap

i havnt had a chance to take the bumpers off (and to be honest im unsure about doing that, im not very good with cars). Im worried if i took it off id snap something else

does anyone know if there are some kind of clips that im likely to have broken or able to push into place or perhaps this is a common problem?

as ive only recently just bought the car im very tempted to just send it to a shop to fix the whole thing.

all advice appreciated

It could be an issue with the plastic piece into which the moulding/cover clips into. It's possible to see that or change it without removing the cover completely.

It requires removal of the bolt (10mm socket) under the bottom of the tailgate and some of the fixing pins underneath the cover. Their centre pulls out to release the pins.

Then pull the cover away from the car, where the gap is, it should fully unclip. There's a black fixing secured to the car's body. One (I think) bolt which requires a 10mm socket/spanner. That bracket pulls off but it is hooked under the bodywork at one end. There are rectangular holes into which the moulding clips. could have been enlarged. Also worth looking at the fixings on the edge of the cover to check for damage. It could be those causing the issue.

Or, if you are not confident, have a bodyshop look at it! Make sure they don't rip you off though.

The bumper cover clips into the holes at the top. This is a right hand. They are handed. Retainer, that's what I couldn't think of. Possibly still the same? The pictures are of a part for a 2014 Mk3 (pre facelift)

The culprit when I had to change mine was a plantpot. And me, another plantpot of course, for not seeing it!

Oh goody, I'm ecstatic, just been promoted to "Contributor".

Thank you.

so theres a chance its just a simple adjustment job?

if so thats very reassuring. Im worried ive snapped something off the bumper or something and would require a whole new bumper to fix the clip. Im not confident at all so i may take it to a shop

Might be worth taking it back to the place you got it, especially if it is a dealer. They'll have seen this many times. Tell them what happened (be honest) and they'll either just pop it back on the spot if possible or tell you what it might need to be fixed.

You can try to push it in, wiggle a bit and press, just use more sense than power and see if it’s clips back in, it might needs to be undone from under side first as usual bumpers going in top side first., but you can still try to push, if unsure perhaps visit to the dealer as recommended.
Good luck

It just clips into place, open the tailgate and slacken the 2 bolts off, pull and lift the bumper from the bottom, and it will come back into line, use the palm of your hand to push the clips back in, nip the bolts back up

it doesn't help that the tabs on the bumper are made of cheese

Will give this a try. I have tried without slackening off the bolts and had no luck.

My concern is that the "cheese" tabs have snapped off.

They aren't tabs as such, more little ramps moulded into the edge

I take it they break easily?

No they are soft and just deform and round off at the edges

I see. Once deformed is the only solution a new bumper?

Nah, just means they are more prone to popping out under impacts; A minor problem. The bumper's plastic so no point in getting a new one unless it's cracked or something.
