MOT failure - guidance

Hi all,

This is my car:

57829af456eab_KojacAuris.thumb.PNG.b51ef5ea033fef791507a9455cdd3737.PNG

Mot:

"Fail - Repair immediately (major defect):

Side repeater not working - offside."

I am asking the forum for help.

Is this something I can repair it myself or will it require a garage to do it.

I'm assuming its just the bulb or a fuse. It's the one in the wing mirror.

Cheers,

Kojac

Most likely a bulb, second most likely a poor connection to the bulb and third most likely a wiring break. Crack it open and take a look.

How do I take the clear plastic cover off the wing mirror.

What's the correct process?

Hoping ti do this tonight.

Would be grateful if anyone can help me understand how to access the bulb.

Never done it before.

Look for the videos on YouTube to familiarise yourself, you can also look for Prius as this is basically very similar car and even more popular.
Good luck

I've not taken one off either but would imagine the whole outer cover unclips rather than just the clear bit where the bulb is.

Yeah, if you get a plastic trim removal tool/spudger it will make it a lot easier. A thickish guitar pick will also work. Try not to resort to a screw driver unless you're not too bothered about tool marks on the plastic...

It can't be too hard as my colleague managed to do both of his himself

Good idea. Old credit cards make great case openers for things like remote controls so might be up to the job here as well. Good thinking.

Just passed my mot today, no problems at all., as to be expected 3.5 hours of cleaning and checking everything yesterday👨‍🔧🏁  The guy only asked me to confirm the mileage as it seems to him on the bigger side. 🤣👌

As others have indicated (no pun intended) the plastic cover will prise off using a suitable trime removal tool or even a flat screwdriver with the blade covered to minimise any potential damage to the plastic.

If feeling brave it is easier to first remove the mirror glass to gain access to the cover clips and release them from the inside! The mirror is best adjusted to it's extreme horizontal position and it will lever off. It will not break the glass. It is secured by a circular plastic fixing. If a heated mirror there will be a plug to remove.

Honestly Tony, with the miles you do Toyota should pay you to sell hybrids to the long-haul diesel crowd!

I swear there are truckers who do less miles than you!!

Toyota really should offer me a job within 🤣

when I was cabbie in London I had sold a couple of Priuses to my customers, seen on their driveways few weeks after we originally talked about Toyota hybrids and how they work etc.,  now kind of a test driver but only share my thoughts wit you, still something. 👌 This year because of the lockdown I only managed to do 34000 miles , but that’s ok at least I saved for a set of tyres. It seems like I will get another season with what I have now. Check this one 👍

By this standard, I shouldn't own a car......only barely manage 3k per year, if that.🤣

On this car the repeater is an LED lamp, no bulb to remove sorry, it's a lamp replacement!

In that case it might be just poor connection or broken wire,. led  usually lasts ages , and how much does it cost a replacement lamp?

Well that's not as bad as I thought... I would have guessed at least 3 figures!! Still, hopefully it is just a dodgy connection then!

Found an aftermarket part on eBay for £13.50.

What is it that I am missing. Why shouldn't I give it a shot?

It might be worth a link to the eBay item for others to check it is correct? Seems very cheap. Are you sure it's a l.e.d. repeater and not just the housing/lens for a "conventional" light?

For comparison, a replacement "conventional" capless lamp is about £2.

For anyone that struggles with this in the future:

Toyota Aruis MK1

Wing Mirror Indicator Module:

Step one - remove glass

Step two - release wing mirror cover clips - as they are now accessible. (Take ur time - squat down - as there are two clips higher up, but many on the lower side of the cover. They are not easy to see).

Step three - remove retaining screws of the module.

Step four - press down on the tab that holds the connector in place and remove.

Step four replace module - clip in connector - be alert to the position of the pins in the module (I had to bend them into place).

Then reverse process.

Key concept to communicate - it is best to remove the mirror - So you can easily access the cover retention clips. If you simply pry off the cover first (credit card or guitar pick) you WILL damage the retaining clips. So - Mirror off first. Then clips. Etc.
