Looking to replace the stereo in Daughters 2004 T-Spirit

Hi All,

Been a while since I've been on here and a very long time (35 years) since I've messed about fitting car stereos!! My daughter loves her 2004 T-Spirit so I was thinking about getting the stereo replaced so she can stream her Spotify through it via her phone (i-phone).

Am I correct in saying the main radio bit (upper part of the dash) remains as it and the CD section gets replaced ? Not decided on a replacement unit but needs to handle bluetooth streaming, and be around the £125-£150 price point.

I think I'll also need the appropriate cables (would like to retain the steering wheel controls as well)...

Has anyone got a 'shopping list' on what's needed ?

You will need a facia adapter and steering wheel controls adapter - there is some wiring required on the Mk1 yaris to get audio controls working (3 wires)

Fascia - CT24TY06

Controls adapter - CTSTY001.2

For your budget, I would go with a single din Kenwood or pioneer, alpine with a bit more money - avoid no name brands, Sony low and mid-range stuff is dire

Pioneer MVH-S420BT or Pioneer MVH-S420DAB

Shop around prices are all over the place

ps. Be aware mobile phone laws are changing, touching or scrolling on a phone could get you £120 fine and 6 points (For a new driver within the first 2 years, 6 points is a loss of licence and retest)

Hey about that, is there any clarification on it?

I've heard that if the phone is in a fixed mount you *can* touch/use it!

re. the OP, it's easier to get a module like:

https://www.xcarlink.co.uk/toyota/

rather than replacing the whole head unit. I had the USB/SD-card one and it worked well, and they do a bluetooth version as well - Just plugs into the CD Changer port on the back of the head unit.

It says it allows you to control the phone's playback via the steering wheel controls like the USB/SD one does too!

'tis expensive for what it is, but that's the problem with custom stuff like this. 2004 should be a Mk1 Yaris, so you need one with the bigger Type 2 connector, and you will likely need a Type 2 Y-cable as on some Yarisesisues the CD changer port has a loop-back cable plugged in which needs to be retained or it stops working!

IIRC Connects2 and Grom audio also produce similar modules but I'm not as familiar with them.

It is possible to fit it without removing the head unit, but you'd have to lie upside-down in the passenger footwell to look up behind it and it's a lot harder if you don't know what you're doing, mainly which plugs and how to remove them while upside-down...! If you've never done it before I'd recommend just removing the headunit - It's more work but is much more straightforward, and there is a site with some good instructions:

Tech has come a long way, the xlink relies on the CD changer interface something the mk1 yaris does not have, its more effective to go aftermarket

The Mk1 Yaris does indeed have a CD changer interface! Or at least my D4D's did - I had an xcarlink in both of them, connected up to the type2 port of the headunit with a Y-splitter cable and was able to play MP3s off an SDcard and change tracks with the steering controls and everything!

That's good clarification on the phones thing tho' - It clearly says Hand-free use in a cradle is still acceptable.

It does mean you need to be careful if there is a police car behind you when you go through a McDonalds drive-thru and try to pay with your phone's contactless tho'

Edit: Oooh I read further down and they made an exemption for that specific scenario! Well that's a surprise, I didn't think they actually paid attention to such arguments during consultations!

I honestly don't know why they keep implementing such pointless laws - The driving with undue care or attention laws would already cover the situations this law covers. Just leaves less room for common sense!

Why not get a bluetooth transmitter like this

https://www.amazon.co.uk/【Upgraded-Version】Clydek-Transmitter-Bluetooth-Hands-free/dp/B07TYW7W6D/r

You pop it into the 12V Lighter socket and can transmit from your phone or MP3 player to it via bluetooth. It then transmits to your cars radio

They did say they want to retain steering wheel controls, whereas that just streams the music, but otherwise it's a decent solution. Is a bit like a more modern version of the old cassette tape AUX adaptor I used to use in my Fiesta

Ah right ok. The volume on the steering wheel still works but yeah if you want to skip a song you have to tap a button on the transmitter
