Hello

I own a 1993 Toyota Windom (VCV 10) which has started idling REALLY BADLY! Has anybody got any tips for what to look for?

Also, it has started drinking petrol. Usually if you push the car hard it will drink, but now if I drive like a grandma, it still drinks anyway. Somebody help. It's starting to drive me nuts!!!!!!!

Sill question have you checked the plugs and HT leads, timing, could be an electrical fault which would require more indepth testing so would need a service to check that one out...

Thanks mate, I should have thought about that. It has been really hard to find a good mechanic for this car. Toyota says take it to Lexus and Lexus says "No mate, it's a Toyota, you'll have to take it there (The car is a Lexus ES 300 over here but I'm guessing you probably know that!)

Thanks for the quick response mate:)

other option would be to try a quick post on Lexus Owners Club the sister site of toc 'www.lexusownersclub.com' as there will be a lot more lexus/windom expertese on there than there is on here :)

Good Luck with it...

Hmmm

I am wondering if you have a split intake... this allows too much air in and it bypasses the computer.. this will cause it to idle and drink fuel.

You should find this on the right hand side by the air filter box... you will see the air intake and the electronic contol unit.. then there is a big ribbed rubber tube that is about 6 inches long... try checking this for splits.

If it is split then you will need to order this. Tell Toyota to stop playing silly buggers because I use Toyota for all my parts!

Hi WINDOM,

Does your idle problem happens all the time? In other words, does it just happen when the engine is hot or cold, or both?

Hey cal

To answer your question, the car is really smooth when it is cold and in Drive. Shift to Neutral when its cold and its all good.

But when it gets warmed up, it starts to shudder quite a bit, and it's very uneven. (ie You can't guess when it will happen next, it does'nt seem to be in a cycle)

Especially when you shift from any gear to Park and Neutral.

I had a tiny meeting with a traffic island recently which ripped off the splash guards and pushed in the sump. But I don't see how that would affect fuel economy. I could very well be wrong though. :D

Hi WINDOM,

What you have described seems to be the mixture being too rich.

When the engine is cold, the mixture is set to be rich by default, known as fast idle and the idle speed should go up i.e. 1500rpm instead of 800rpm, so in your case the car is Ok when cold. Once the engine warms up, the idle comes down to the normal idling speed but when the mixture is rich at normal idling speed, it will cause problems.

From what you have described, I would test the O2 sensor and airflow meter. First step is to check the OBD On Board Diagnostic to see whether if there are any fault recorded. You can do this yourself without the need of any specialist tools. Let me know how you got on. :)
