Question about Yaris's torque converter

I have a Gold Yaris 2001 1.3 automatic, a Polish lorry swerve on the A12 for no reason and hit my passenger side door, the insurance said it is uneconomical to repair, but the car have done quite a lot of miles 178,886.

I want to get the same Yaris what I have before because it is the best car that I have ever owned. Unfortunate I went to test one of the 2005 Yaris facelift, it has MMT. I disliked the feel when it changes a bit slow. I want like to know what the year is the latest to fit a torque converter on Yaris 1.3?

Do not touch one with MMT....MK2

The MK3 came out in 2011 and can be had with Multidrive, which is not a Torque Converter, but is a form of CVT and mine is exceptionally good.

I have yet to hear or read of one that has failed.

mk1 yaris can either be automatic or Freetronic (earlier version of the MMT) the Mk2  uses the MMT, fine while its working but can be a money pit if it breaks

Mk3 non hybrid uses a CVT (still uses a torque convertor)

Another thing to take into account is the London ulez it will not be long before its expanded, petrols before 2006 get hit with the £12.50 a day charge as do pre 2016 diesels

The Aygo is MMT, The IQ auto uses a CVT

2001 Yaris book value is only a few hundred quid tbh any minor bump will write the car off

I suppose if the damage is only cosmetic, you could ask to buy the car back from the insurers and continue to use it until you find a suitable replacement. Even get it repaired yourself? Let's face it, a twenty-year-old car is only worth a few hundred pounds (if that) and the fact it's got a written off marker on it isn't going to affect its value much.

Mk1's with torque converters are incredibly rare in this country - I think they are rarer than the D4D Mk1s, and those are already pretty darn rare!

If you really like it, and it's in decent nick and not all rusted underneath, I'd buy it back from the insurer and get it repaired.

For other Yarisuseseises, IMHO the only automatic ones worth looking at are the Mk3 (which is not very Yarisy) and Mk4 (which is bloody expensive!) hybrids - All the others used the horrible MMT automated-manual box, which has not made for many happy owners. The Mk3 had a CVT, which is slightly less-worse and has at least been more reliable, but IMHO there's no point getting it and you're better off stretching a bit more to get the hybrid as it's just better in every way.

Sadly the stalwart reliable torque converter has fallen out of favour due to emissions standards and fuel economy - The only cars I can think of off the top of my head that had one in (semi-)recent times were the Suzuki Ignis, the Fiat Panda and the Toyota GT86 :naughty:

vauxhall still used a proper Auto up to 2018 the corsa, ash tray and mokka all have 4-6 speed slush boxes

older Toyota wise the Yaris Verso has a proper auto, Corolla/Auris may be another option - smaller cars are still at a premium in the southeast
