rear door unlocking foible, or failure to understand how it works.

In a 2021 Rav 4.

(i)When I approach the locked vehicle, with the key in my pocket, I touch the drivers door handle to unlock, then I can instantly reach for and open the rear door.

(ii)But if I have been driving, park up and switch off, exit the vehicle, not necaeeasily immediately, and attempt to open a rear door, I cannot.

I must use the unlock button on the armrest, which I always forget to do because of (i)

I have looked at the user guide and it says the rear doors can be programmed to unlock when park is selected, see(ii), OR inside of 45 seconds after switching off.

But gives no instructions as to how this can be achieved?

Presumably if you ask at your dealer, they can program the doors to operate in that way.

I think the key thing here is to understand how it works (and then live with it!)

It's pretty much as you describe. If you switch off and 'immediately' open the driver's door, all the doors will unlocked; if you pause to sort yourself out after switching off before opening the driver's door then only the driver's door will unlock. If your passenger leaps out as soon as you have stopped, whether you have switched off or not, she gets very cross because she can't open the rear doors ... 🙂   In such situations you need to manually unlock the doors using either the button on the driver's arm rest or the key!

It's amusing whether it's considered a foible or a feature!

Thanks guys.

Its all TOO complicated for this here Ax wielding technophobe is all.

So I need to learn to absently mindedly open the drivers door as soon as I stop, and bugger the Dutch reach.

sigh.

P.S.

I dont know whether to say the dealer was bad or good, but just recently the towbar electrics failed entirely, with a trailer, in the gloaming and 25 miles from home. Phoned the dealer who tried saying to book her in for the next day, I tentitvely suggested bring her there "right now"(being near hand), dropped the trailer off where we were at and reached the dealer at 16:30, They worked at her for just over 1 hour, a misplaced/failed/incorrectly secured "clip" somewhere about the towbar loom. But boy! it took a lot of finding!

Anyway pleased with the instant attention if somewhat disgruntled with the unexpected failure, which could have proved expensive otherwise, furthur from home or a Toyota agent.

It's not that bad Marcus - you can always leave the settings as they are and touch the door unlock button, with your left hand, just before you open the door to get out.

Alternatively, you can change the vehicle settings via My Toyota. Log-in to My Toyota, select your vehicle and Vehicle Settings and set "Auto unlock by shift to P". The car will then unlock all the doors as soon as you put the car into Park:

Alternatively again, you could disable speed sensitive door locking to avoid locking the doors in the first place:

As Philip says, you can set the car to unlock when the shift is put into 'P', this doesn't have to be done online, it can be done in the car.

Select 'Setup' on the multi function display.

Scroll down to 'Vehicle' (this is greyed out if the ignition is not on).

Select 'Vehicle'  then select 'Vehicle Settings'

Select 'Door Lock Settings'

One of the options listed, is to unlock all doors when shifting to 'P' - by default it is set to Off, but just select On.

I've done it on mine and it works a treat.
