To clarify if I have already driven I can force EV mode when warmed. Above is from cold/start.

On my 2015 pre face-lift auris and 2018 auris they would happily go into EV Mode, even with fan on. Right through winter except on the absolute coldest days (literally one or two days of the year). 2015 car was left parked outside for its first year or so then garaged. 2018 auris was always garaged. I could pull it out of the garage and drive to the same point every day on EV, never touched the HVAC. Maybe prius behaved differently.

On corolla fan OFF achieves the "same" as what I could do with EV Mode on the auris. Partners mk3 yaris was exactly the same, Mk4 is now same as Corolla.

Obviously this was assuming enough charge in the HV battery

And what is enough 🤔

My charge bar never goes below 5 which sort of suggests I am carrying a lot of dead weight. Or the charge bars are only a rough representation.

What the ECU considers "enough".

On a not so cold day, first start of the day, 4 or more bars was almost certainly enough for the ECU to allow EV Mode (forced) on the Auris. On a similar day, 6/8 bars is not enough for the ECU to allow EV Mode (forced) on the Corolla.

RAv won't go into EV if less than 4 bars.  I also notice that when cruising 60/70mph it alternates constantly between charging the battery/using the Battery and the bars stay around 4 or 5, never higher.  At lower speeds more charge does build up.

The charge bars are a rough representation, and there's some fuzziness around them and where they change, one bar doesn't always mean a certain percentage. There's a lot of overlap between a few of the bars.

Yes watching it when driving at a steady speed is amusing. It seems to be forever switching between modes. Weirdly I've sometimes seen it claim to be using the ICE to charge the Battery and move the car whilst at the same time using the Battery to move the car. It's only for brief periods though so I've always assumed it's a glitch in the display logic.

That's not my take on it, I think it's more like the ICE does not have instant on, in the same way MG2 has, so there's the handover when ICE and MG2 are working together.

I imagine when it's pedal to the metal time, and you want maximum acceleration ("... everything she's got, Scottie"), then the ICE and the Battery will be shown contributing simultaneously. The only time I've done this, I wasn't looking at the display, so I don't know.

Yes, you and everyone can try some hard accelerations on motorway if safe to do so and you can watch the Battery will be consumed after the 3 attempt or so, electric motors does help a lot while under heavy load. 👍
