Dash Cam installation for 2021/22 Corolla Icon Tech (1.8 5dr)

Hi guys,

I would like to ask how did you install dash cams in the 2021/22 Corolla Icon Tech by yourselves ? Espcially how did you deal with arranging the wires ? I know the power supply for the camera need to be plugged into the 12V socket. I havent got the car yet but the 12 socket for Icon Tech seems to be inside the middle arm rest (or does it have such a socket at all?). So may I ask how did you install the camear  when the socket is in such a position?

Thanks!

Normally it would be piggybacked direct from the vehicle fuse box, that way the 12 volt socket isn't used.

Are you not taking up the Toyota dash cam / cams option & installed by a Toyota dealer?

I've fitted a couple of dash cams in the past on various vehicles & always piggy backed from the fuse box.

I have a new C-HR on order & ill let the dealer supply / fit the dash cams then there is no worries with wiring or removing / refitting trims etc.

I've fitted a Nextbase Dashcam with the plug in rear cam, power is piggybacked off the 12v fuse box under the glove box.

The cables for the rear cam is run along the roof lining on the left hand side (ariel runs along the right side) and up through the grommets into the boot door.

Worth noting that the Nextbase rear cam is electrically noisy - dab signal is affected, so if you have a weak signal before you won't recieve it after

In my first Corolla, a hatchback, I ran the cable along the top of the windscreen, down the door pillar, under the steering wheel and along the centre console to the socket under the armrest. It tucks in easily around the windscreen and the door pillar, but needs cable clips (I used stick-on ones) under the dash and along the console. It wasn't aesthetically pleasing, but it worked ok. My TS came with a dealer fitted, hardwired dash cam, which is neater and has survived a windscreen change without any drama.

My next car will have this Nextbase camera system.

I have a small standalone camera at the moment and not experimented a DAB problem.

Is it a general problem that most people experience?

It's a known problem with the Nextbase rear camera, there are plenty of posts about it on the forum. I suspect it's due to the connection they use at the rear camera

I've made many attempts rerouting the cable and camera placement but all have the same result, as soon as I plug in the rear camera I lose the weaker signal stations

I have 2 separate,  but it's pretty simple to tuck safely under most of the trim (rear hatch slightly trickier), so that no clips are needed, and very minimum cable shown.

Mine is company,  so purely plug-in, with a heavy Battery pack in-between both.

I would avidly avoid Nextbase for multiple reasons  (shocking fixing, Battery etc), but my rear cam is an older Nextbase with 3M adhesive pad under the suction cup.

I use Viofo,  and if you check some quality dasncam groups, you'll understand why, unless you are looking at serious kit etc

Seems people are having problems with Nextbase, mine must be a real wonky one……… it works absolutely ok.

My dealer fitted front cam fell off.  He fitted a new adhesive.  One advantage of the dealer fitting.

My Nextbase 380GW has been in several different cars, all new Corolla's, it's been bullet proof. One video was invaluable to the Police as I was first on scene at a very serious accident. I was able to show footage to the officer at the scene and email it in before getting home. Very handy to do all that via the app

He didn't fit it properly. It's vital the cam base and screen are thoroughly cleaned before installation. Mine has been on and off several cars, I clean it and fit a new pad each time, never had a problem

I use a garmin mini for the rear one wired into the same circuit as the front one ( piggy back fuse holder) on fuse board the one for the 12 volt socket supply. My dealer fitted the front one Nextbase have had no problems with either.

I had a DAB issue with my Nextbase dual camera set up previously with my Volvo V40, 90% fixed by re-routing cables as low as possible away from the roof & fitted ferrite cores at either end of the cables. Having learned my lesson with the Volvo when I switched to Toyota TS I used the same approach, running the cables from windscreen / mirror down the "A" pillar, back of glove box , footwell & into the 12v supply in arm rest. Rear camera is fed from front camera so same route down "A" pillar, down door seal, along behind the plastic front & back floor trim to the boot, then I put the cable behind the boot seal to the top centre of the rear screen, left a small loop of cable for movement when the tailgate is opened. So far 6 months on no DAB issues.

P-K, it was the camera that fell off the adhesive.  Still, to the dealer "Fix", job done.

Cameron, thank you.  As above, I had the dealer fix the rear view camera.  He made a pigs of the wiring and then connected it incorrectly.  He made the assumption that as the camera was working the wiring was fine.  He hadn't realised the camera was working from its internal Battery 😁

Next time I shall discuss routing prior to fitting.

PS, I used to do lots of work on the cars, fitting an automatic reversing light, rewiring headlight to relay control, installing hot wash, rear fogs, ice warning, and transferring cruise control from a single carb motor to a twin carb to an injection.  In the latter case the garage said the couldn't do it.

Now I am less agile and can afford to pay someone else to carry the risk.

I have Nextbase cameras fitted in my C-HR, the wife's current car and cars of my son and daughter. They all work fine, with no problems at all. The only problem I had was with one of their camera mounts. I contacted Nextbase and they sent me a replacement free of charge. I would definitely recommend them. Product and customer service are excellent.

We're waiting for our new Yaris to arrive, with a dealer fitted Nextbase camera 😀

Mine’s 3yrs old on it’s second car and (touch wood) no problems. And I’ve just ordered a new Yaris Hybrid and I’m gonna get my dealership to transfer it to the new car. Whenever it arrives, I just ordered it yesterday.
