Wow, I suppose we shouldn’t be shocked, because suv’s are more versatile than the saloons. I hope that they keep the Corolla name as in my opinion the Corolla is the car which made Toyota what it is today.

It tends to be the UK where saloons aren't too popular, which is why the previous two generations of the Corolla saloon were dropped in the UK between 2007 and 2018.

Hatchback & Touring sport versions continue only the 4dr Saloon is dropped and a New ( SUV ) Corolla Cross will be out soon.

It's a pity, saloon may not be the most practical, but definitely is the most beautiful:-)

As I said earlier, think the saloon is just dropped in the UK as saloons historically don't sell as well as hatchbacks or estates here.

Toyota Europe sold 80,146 Corolla saloons in 2021

I wouldn’t buy a saloon, not any manufacturers saloon, but they do look nice. A big hatch or estate is far more practical.

Spot on - when I used to work in a tool hire shop, you always got the customers with there posh German saloon cars roll up expecting something awkward like a Wacker plate or lawn mower to fit through the small opening in to the boot so they could avoid a delivery charge.

Hatchbacks & estates where so much more practical at the time for loading hired equipment in to.

Now the SUV is very popular & is basically a pumped up hatchback.

They started out as pick-ups (or ute's) with a frock. I remember some 25 years ago riding in a Chevy Suburban. Things have moved on, of course and they are no longer based on pickups, but generally the same platform as an equivalent Hatchback or saloon. I was tempted by the Yaris Cross, but TBH I much prefer the more secure handling of the HB.

Had it been a little smaller and narrower I would have bought one. Many have probably never owned a saloon and don't know what they are missing. One of the big advantages with a true saloon style is that the back window never gets dirty in wet weather, you could do a 100 motorway miles in the rain and it would remain dry and clear. They also tend to be quieter as the rear suspension is more acoustically isolated in a proper boot.

Is that why saloons very rarely seem to have rear wipers??

I've always wondered about that...

Very true 👍 Saloons has always been best passengers cars but they will disappear soon and give space to suv and mpv s which may make a return. Estates are cool, I like them plus hatchbacks but Corolla hatch is really on the tiny side especially rear leg room, otherwise nice looking car.

GB only or worldwide?

Lee's post just refers to the decision made by Toyota GB. Historically saloons, unless premium saloons, never sell well in the UK - UK buyers preferring hatchbacks. Which is why Toyota GB didn't import the previous two generations of the saloon (2007-2018).

Toyota GB have also ceased importing the Prius.

I guess so. The rear window on a hatch is dirtier after driving through a single puddle on a dry road then a true saloon would be after a couple of hundred miles driving in the rain. It is as stark a difference as that. By a 'true saloon' I mean one with a classic body style where the boot lid extends a fair way back from the base of the rear window.

I've had enough estates in the past beginning around 1983, three Escort 1100's and three Astra's. Back then and the ones we had (company cars, fleet spec) didn't have rear wipers. The first Escorts didn't even have heated rear screens.

I prefer the look of saloons generally and they are inherently structurally stronger than hatches.

But even before SUVs took off not that many people bought none-premium brand saloons so this news is not surprising.

Sometimes saloons that are based off a hatch version can look a bit weird too, it's better if they are designed as saloons from scratch.

I've had a 406, a Bora and a C class saloon.  Only the 406 had a rear wiper.

The ugliest I can think of, off the top of my head, is the Peugeot 309. It was based on the 305.

Another (not) beauty is the Renault 9, based on the 11. I am certain there’s a version of the Clio 3 with a real boot, but I can’t remember it’s name, it may not have been sold in the UK or even in Continental Europe.

I'll mention the SAAB 99 again. My first was a saloon with a large secure boot. We did get a dishwasher in it but couldn't shut the lid.

We also had dogs and we couldn't put them in the boot except for very short journeys.

The SAAB hatchback was enormous and wider than a Mercedes E Class.

As a nation of geriatrics, golfers and dog owners, SUV or HB fits the bill.

Vw Jetta 2011-2019 one of the best looking saloon based on hatchback, I think the current Corolla saloon is also a good looking car, just not preferred over hatchback here, in Ireland it’s opposite and there they have a wide choice of trim levels and options. Anyway, the time of saloons especially large ones is over, I do think suv, cross overs and hatchbacks (liftbacks model 3, Prius ) will dominate the car market in the next 5 years or so along with estates. 👌

I won't post images, just do an image search for Yaris Sedan 2022, Mitsubishi Attrage and Nissan Sunny Super Saloon 2021 to see what the UK is missing out on.

I’ve driven the attrage sedan and let me assure you that you are better off without its existence.

the Yaris sedan is a Mazda 2 demio aka sedan

not a bad car but ultimately less practical but slightly more comfy for long distance.

Lol, that good is it.

I just miss there being something on sale in the UK like the old Carina II 4door size of car from manufacturers such as Toyota.

Thanks for the info though.
