How long, on average should rear brake discs last?

Another way of cleaning the rear discs is to find an empty space and drive in reverse quite fast and brake hard. This will force the rear brakes to act and also help to free of any "sticking" calliper slide pins.

Interesting. I've not heard of this. I'll need to give it a go.

It works , but don’t accelerate as fast as you can because as soon as you hit the brakes you will realise how weak they are when there is no regenerative braking to help. ⚠️🚫👍

Yeah I've been finding that braking slightly harder to get it to at least 2 blocks of regen gives better energy recovery than gentle braking/coasting to a stop, but at the same time timing your coasting so you don't have to stop at all saves more energy than stopping, even with regen. Either way, good strategies for getting those high mpgs!

For my ICE car, I really used to coast the car as much as i can, and never used long brakes. MyT hybrid coaching is always pushing me for long brakes. May be I should adhere to ICE car style short brakes if regen is not affected and brake discs are kept clean ?

When you are using long brakes with Toyota hybrids not always you are at max regenerative braking and sometimes you are missing to collect more energy. Best practice is to try to eliminate unnecessary slow downs while you anticipate the road ahead but when braking to standstill it’s imminent better to slow down quickly with moderate braking force, doing so will generate electricity at its max rate and also will keep your brakes shiny and in good shape. And btw on these cars you may also find that rear brakes wear faster than front ones. 👌

You can switch to neutral N instead of hard braking and do a few continuous moderate slow downs from 50mph to 20mph and repeat, this will work better and faster to cleaning the rust off. Make sure no tailgaters behind 😉👍

i have a 2023 corolla touring sports that i noticed the rear discs are a bit scored, and a small bit of rust,

does this method work in the 2023 Corolla TS 5th Gen Hybrid?  can you switch to N while moving  to brake from 50 to 20 then back into D without stopping?

car has done low mileage,  2700km in 6 months

Hi,

Yes you can select N while in motion and apply brakes to clean the discs.
But if you brake more progressively (harder ) , you don’t need to flip to N, just as you drive in D.
Ideal places for that are slip roads on motorway exits for example, but remember to look no one is following close behind, safety first.
Also Toyota recommends in the car manual never to select N when cruising at speeds. I did many times though and no problems at all, but everyone does anything on their own risk. 👍

ok thanks, i will try the harder breaking on quiet road, in D mode to clear the discs, car is 6 mths old and only  has 2700 km done so very low use, so need to drive it more..
