Abs Problem On A G^

Hi, I wonder if anyone here can help me?

I have a '97 Toyota Corolla G6 which has an intermittent ABS problem.

The problem started in winter when an incredible amount of salt was put on the roads, the ABS light came on & stayed on.

The car was booked into the local Toyota dealer who diagnosed a duff near side front wheel sensor, but couldnt be fixed till they had the parts.

On the way back from the garage I took the car through the carwash & the light went out. Thinking that maybe the problem was caused by a buildup of salt crystals I cancelled the replacement.

Over the months since then, the light would come on/off intermittently, but washing the wheel always made the problem go away.

I took the old sender off & cleaned it up which seemed to be partially successful, but the problem always came back eventually.

So I bit the bullet & paid the £120 for the new sender & the problem remains! The light will come on 1st thing, but after a 5 mile drive or so invariably goes out if I turn the ignition off & restart.

When the light is on the ABS does not work, when its out it works perfectly. The light never comes on halfway through a journey, and only comes on 1 in 3 times when starting from cold.

Anyone got any ideas?

dont think that the 1 sensor is making the light come on , it could be 1 of the others.it may be that the toothed ring on the end of either drive shaft has teeth missing or is very clogged. the sensor may not be aiming in a straight line.may well be that a wire somewhere on 1 of the sensors is slightly broken and making contact whenever it feels like it. take it to toyota they checked mine for free.when the light is on if possible.also the light is supposed to come on when you first start the car , its the ecu checking the abs system when all is well it goes off.

Thanks for that - I'll go check that the "teeth" are all there & unclogged - the light is on pretty much all the time now - so if I can't find the fault its off to toyota again & hand them a large chunk of cash.

1 way to test it is to slam on the brakes , which ever wheel that locks up is the one with a faulty sensor.
