Looking at buying a used Avensis , or maybe an Auris?

Hi all

I am in the market for a new (to me) car and I am considering going to look at 2 tomorrow.

The first one is an Avensis 2.0 D-4D TR Nav 5dr, 2011 with 110,000 miles. The second is a petrol Auris 1.6 v matic colour collection, 2012 with 70, 000 miles. Both cars are manual.

Does anything stand out in terms of what would be the better car, or what would be one to avoid with known problems etc? I am more swayed towards the Avensis as there is a bit more room in it with it being an estate although I’m  wary of diesels due to HPFP failures, injectors etc 

I would really appreciate any help, as this would be my first Toyota.

The Avensis is a nicer car, but you soon won't be able to drive to any major city without getting 'fined' so it's hard to recommend unless that's just a non-issue for you. Early 1AD engines had oil burning issues, and I'm not sure what year they fixed it. Maybe see if the engine has been replaced in the car's history by a revised Toyota one; If it has, you're okay but if it's on the original engine, then unless you do a shedload of miles regularly I'd avoid it just in case.

The Auris is not as nice, and is thirstier, but generally pretty bullet-proof. The 1.6 V-matic can have issues if neglected, so check the car has been serviced on time and had regular oil changes. (To be honest, that's good advice when looking at any car! :laugh: )

Thank you Cyker. I live in Northern Ireland, so I’m not too worried about getting fined (I’m assuming for emissions) in large cities.

I did read a little about the oil burning and iirc head gasket issues, although from what I picked up I think they were fixed around 2009? Hopefully someone can confirm or correct me on that.

Hybrid is what drew me to the Auris estate. Looked at hatch and too small. Avensis looks more premium but wouldn't want a diesel again after my Lexus IS 220D.

The Auris does it's job well and is cheap to run as £0 road tax as Pre April 2017. Personally I wouldn't buy either and look at a petrol Avensis or Auris Hybrid.

Welcome!  I'm from Northern Ireland (Londonderry here). I just recently bought my first Toyota a couple of weeks ago. I originally was looking for an Auris but found a good 2018 plate Avensis in my budget in Limavady and went for it. 

Others would be better in commenting on that particular 2.0 diesel and 1.6 auto petrol as owners. But I'd say go for the auto with lower miles personally! 

The Avensis is fantastic smoothness and comfort - that was my reason for selling my old car (a DS3 Prestige 120hp diesel manual) and the Auris would have been a big enough upgrade. I definitely got what I was looking for.  It drinks diesel (I have the later 1.6 BMW 1WW engine) and it's quick enough, but the 2.0 will definitely feel right in a car of this size.  

As you know, I don't think Belfast will really get the ULEZ or similar charges. Same with Derry, can't see it happening here anytime soon. 

Here, if you want to check out my Avensis as I just spotted you're in L'Derry too, to get a look at it - it'll be a bit different than the 2011 in the finer details, but the size / general comfort will be the same.  If you're interested in that let me know.  Or any questions I can answer, let me know. 

Can confirm it's not too much of a pain in Foyleside car park :L  ...can't say I'll be as lucky with time. Only had the car a few weeks!

According to other threads that happened to be talking about the AD-engines, it does seem like the 2011 ones should be out of the danger zone so the Avensis is back on the table! I'd say if you do enough miles to warrant it, it'd be a better shout over the Auris. The diesel engines have much more pull than the petrol ones which makes them very pleasant to drive, and the Avensis is just a nice place to be in (Not that the Auris is bad or anything!)

Aside from known issues like the oil thing, Toyota diesel engines have generally been very robust and reliable. Their main weakness is they need to be used regularly - They really hate being sat around or crawling through slow traffic all the time, but love motorway runs and hauling stuff around up and down hills etc. - Gets them nice and hot, which stops them getting crudded up with deposits. And because they have timing chains, regular servicing and oil changes are a must to keep the chain in good health - It'll easily last the life of the car if it gets regular oil changes with good quality oil.

i picked up a 2014 one a business edt 2.0d4d 1adftv engine one its a great car its got all the bells and whistles bud but if i knew there is a better spec again comes with heated seats .which im sure will be great thats what my business edt is missing.  he got mine from england threw a auction site bca (British car auction) if you sing up u and see what they have and get it threw there and have it shipped over but u need to know someone who has a dealers yard . mine runs really smooth with the £30 a year taxes and well i like it but comes with the dreaded diesel particulate filter which might give bother later in life

unfortunately i will have problems with my 2.0d4d one as tbh i hardly go far on it at all only on weekends and sometimes thats not even that far either so suppose we have to wait and see what joys of £££££££££££££££££££ i will run into got it over  a year ago with 38k and now i have 45k on it lol

TBH you just need to take it on thrash on weekends :naughty: :laugh: 

That's the excuse I used when I had my Mk1 Yaris diesel anyway , "Yeah, gotta take the car out to buy some special shopping from err Harlow or something and totally not going for a hoon to clean out the injectors lalalala *boots it up the A1060*" :laugh: 

Even just using V-Power diesel will help as it's cleaner burning than regular diesel, being semi-synthetic, and has loads of cleaning agents, although some members preferred that mystical BG244 stuff instead :laugh:

i dont think get  that v power diesel ere its either red diesel r white lol im trying to hope maybe take it out kina would love to know maybe threw techstream or with some mod when the 5 injector fires maybe putting on a modded light on my dash so i kno that is the time for me to give the engine a good old thrashing as that car i have i notice nothing when the dpf is in regen unlike my buddy and his 2.0 vw tdi engine he seems to knoe when his car dose the dpf regen

If your going for a tr, keep extra cash aside for replacing injectors if they didn't get replace already. You'll get no warning they are on the way out. Car will be driving as normal and just stop. Won't run lumpy or be smoky when they are about to die. Mine went at 135k miles. €1500 supplied and fitted and that was trade price to me. I still like mine though..... Every car has its problems.

suppose you dont have a dpf on yours and if you did by any chance did you ave any bother

mines a 2010. No dpf fitted thankfully!
