Hand brake faulty after caliper rebuild

Hi!

Yesterday I was rebuilding my rear left caliper as the parking brake was sticking quite a lot.

Let me tell about the issue, before I get to what have I done:

  • Upon reassembly when testing the parking brake the parking brake did not work. Observing the rear of the caliper there was movement on the parking brake lever.
  • The brakes in the rear work normally as the marks on the new disk show wear.

Steps of how I was rebuilding:

  1. Remove the piston and the protective boot
  2. Remove the inner seal between piston and caliper
  3. Disassembled the piston:
    1. Remove the clip from inside, then washer, bearing and screw out
    2. Cleaned the components, replace seal
    3. Rebuild with silicone grease
  4. Remove rear nut and parking brake lever
  5. Remove parking brake cable retainer
  6. Clean the inside of caliper with brake cleaner spray and brake fluid
  7. Rotate the parking brake screw (this might be the issue as I might have damaged something)
  8. Assemble the caliper with new seals, boots and grease
  9. Install the parking brake cable retainer
  10. Install the parking brake lever at the position I thought was correct

Thing I think might have done wrong:

  • Removing the parking brake lever and rotate the assembly past the limits of the two screws
  • Position of parking brake lever on rear screw when I assembled this part? As I was rotating the screw I have noticed that the inner screw was pushing out when pulling on the brake lever. There was some spring force in lever so I set the lever to the position when inner screw was at the lowest position. When assembled the piston was pushed out when the lever was pulled (in hands)
  • Added to much grease inside piston (when assembled the screw inside was spinning quite freely)?
  • Did to little brake bleeding? Does any amount of air in caliper affect the parking brake force?

Any help regarding how to fix my issue is greatly appreciated. I will try to be as responsive to questions as much as possible to remedy this issue.

Hi,

in the meantime I have successfully resolved my issue.

I did a mistake and put too much grease inside the piston. Also the hole was clogged which is supposed to release the pressure inside.

I have cleaned the piston and reassembled the caliper.

I hope that this helps someone who has similar issue.
