Good evening, we have just put a deposit on a Corolla Excell, estimated delivery June.

The salesman offered us about 5 different warranties ie. Gap, wheel and tyre, scratch, dash cams etc. We paid for the scratch cover and we are going to get our own Gap insurance which seems a lot cheaper elsewhere, is the tyre and wheel cover worth getting?

Depends what it includes, and more importantly not include, and of course the cost.

Depends on the cost, how far away you are from the dealership as regards tyre repairs, etc. Bear in mind that if it is the dealership that does any repairs, usually, as with servicing, the service will be appointment based.

We've been offered similar policies before, but as we live 20 miles away from the dealer we bought from, we declined. But that was our choice.

Really it is down to you.

Moved to the Corolla club.

I had to make a claim on the alloy and tyre insurance policy sold to me by our Toyota dealer following a pothole strike. A few forms needed to be completed together with photos of the damage. The claims were accepted within a couple of days - and the money paid into our bank around a week after the receipts for tyres and wheel were submitted. The only downside was that the wheel cover limit was £150, whereas the new alloy cost £352. So I was still £202 out of pocket. The insurers deemed that the wheel was beyond repair and I had to source a new one. If it been repairable then the £150 would have covered it.  BTW the council have refused to accept liability - so I would have been around £500 out of pocket without the insurance cover. In my case I was glad I took it out!

Christopher, how much did the wheel insurance cost you ?

It was around £325 - so in reality only saved a few pounds. However I still have most of my cover remaining. And with the state of the roads at the moment maybe that is a good thing.

I've never bothered with any extras when buying a car.

TBH neither do I normally. I was talked into it by the wife 😀

I will add, I normally buy older cars. My GT 86 was 5 years old when I bought it.

I'm picking my Corolla up today which is 10 months old but I've still not opted for any extras.

We got the scratch cover on ours.  Always get gap elsewhere though.

At this point gap may be a waste of time considering the used car market

the likelihood of negative equity is extremely low

That's assuming everyone buys on PCP, which they don't, and also depends what type of GAP insurance one has.

I looked into dent and scratch insurance when buying my new Corolla and decided against it. Although claiming on it does not effect your car insurance's no claims bonus, you still need to tell your insurer that you claimed on it. This is from the lovemoney website (https://www.lovemoney.com/news/20738/cosmetic-car-insurance-is-it-worth-it):

'You might think claiming on another policy won’t affect your main car cover; but that’s not necessarily the case. Keeping quiet about claims or incidents on the cosmetic front could cause problems with your regular insurer.

The AA’s Ian Crowder says drivers should ‘disclose all claims and incidents to their insurer, while Vanessa Chance from LV= says if you have an accident, incident or claim involving your car, you are "normally required to tell your insurer regardless of whether you make a claim or not". If a customer does not disclose this information when asked, this could invalidate their insurance policy.'

Hence I decided against it. I have a very good, Toyota approved approved local bodyshop who also do smart repairs should the need arise - but hopefully it will not! 😅

Well in this case is it not better to just have your regular insurance stretched out to cover all your needs and no any extra covers.? The manufacturer warranty from Toyota that extends every year suits most private owner too.
