Yaris Verso petrol filling

Hello

I'm having problems when filling up my Verso with petrol, and wondered if this is a recognisable problem(?) My Verso is 22 years old with 103,000 miles on the clock, but is going really well with almost perfect bodywork. It belonged to my late father who died in 2019 and always garaged the car. It's hard to explain, but when I fill up, the petrol pump keeps stopping and I have to find another angle for the nozzle where it will fill VERY slowly. It's as if something's changed in the fuel inlet area. Corrosion perhaps?

Anyone recognise this problem please? If so, what might I do?

many thanks, Jonty (York)

I've had this in my Mk1 Yaris diesels and my old Ford Fiesta; Never found a concrete cause, but could mitigate it just by using different pumps, as it seems some were more prone to it than others (Sometimes even in the same forecourt!)

Starting off more gently also seemed to help, as with affected pumps I found there was a point where if I squeezed too much it would trigger the cut-off immediately, but below that it was fine. Another more dangerous way is holding the nozzle further out, but you got to be careful with that as, if you're not paying attention to how close you are to full, it's easy to over-fill and get fuel everywhere.

The cut off mechanism is triggered by fuel being sucked up into a little hole in the front of the fuel pump nozzle, and I sometimes wondered if there was some sort of minor obstruction in e.g. the return pipe in the fuel filler neck that was causing fuel to surge out of it, as fresh fuel sloshed around in the tank, and trigger the cut-off too early.

It is a tank vent issue, a case of getting the car up in the air and check the filler neck and breather not sure if a verso of that age has a charcoal canister or not, if it has a charcoal canister it may be full or have broken down

Hello Cyker

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I have actually noticed a slight difference when using two different filling stations, so your feedback about pumps/nozzles seems to make sense. I'd rather get the problem sorted though, as there is obviously something wrong with the fuel inlet of my car.

Hello flash22

Thanks, Bob for your reply.

Can you please tell me why the charcoal canister might make a difference in my case. What does it do?

iirc the charcoal canister is in the engine bay - it's related to the emissions' system, and it vents the fuel tank - it may not have one tho

A vacuum pipe comes of the top of the throttle body to a valve (aka a purge valve) then to the canister, this allows the tank to purge the tank pressure/vac back into the intake

The valve can get stuck open, closed and half way

Thanks for this, Bob. I've copied your feedback and will show to my mechanic later in Feb. Much obliged to you, sir.

I wish you well.
