Sat Nav issues

Was out in my C-HR yesterday and speed limits were giving me spurious limits within sat nav. Noticed positioning was out of sync also.

This morning, my wife has video called me to show me her sat nav map in her 2018 Yaris is blank. All other functions work OK. Screen shows road name in bottom corner, but no map display.

Wondering if there are issues with satellites, plus, if others are experiencing these anomalies?

The map display is software on your Satnav. All the satellite gives you is a time signal which with the constellation map and other time synchronised satellites enable it software to deduce your position from hyperbolic position likes.

This is further refined by snap to map logic.  If you are traveling south along a road the Satnav assumes you are on that road but not precisely where.

When you make a turn it again assumes you are on a road matches your position to a road that branched off the first.

This logic can be seen when you negotiate a complex motorway interchange.

Another place where it gets completely screwed up is tight hairpins such as in Gibraltar or Spain.

So, no map is a car fault. Your positioning error may be a combination of lost satellite signal and snap to road illogic.

Several times I have been 'lost' in Southampton.  Anotherwise fully functioning Satnav has frozen near the waterfront.  Not  position error but a straight lock up.

This happened several on several trips  and only in this location. Did a ship's satellite uplink swamp my Satnav?

Understand the Yaris issue is with the car/software, but found it highly coincidental that I was also having issues with my C-HR.

I’ll see what happens to the Yaris sat nav when she leaves work later. Otherwise, it’s back to Mr T.

Regarding no map, the process of parking up and powering off may well reboot the system.

The standard switch off/on procedure. 👍
