Yaris 1.8 SR jumping into 2nd gear

This is an occasional issue where it feels like the car is jumping into second gear from first. It happens most often when it's cold or when I'm accelerating quite hard. What's it likely to be? My thought was maybe a linkage issue?

It could also be the gear linkage as you say - I know the early 1.33's were not set up correctly and there was a TSB for them to have the gear shifter cables re-calibrated, and it's possible some of the 1.8s had that too as presumably it was also made in the french factory before they got shouted at by Toyota bigwigs for poor QA and build quality...

The problem doesn't seem to be an issue anymore. Maybe it was my crappy shifting! FWIW, the 1.8 was made in Japan. 🙂
