Actually, when the children were young and we were going from Inverness to Perpignan we did just that.  I can't remember the first leg pre Channel but I recall stopping at the first service area north of Paris. My daughter was in the front keeping me awake.  When we stopped there was a car directly in front of us.  Four people, could have been dead.  Absolutely dead to the world and all eyes open. 

We then climbed into the back and stretched out to sleep while Mrs 124 and other daughter drove until south of the central Massif.
