What is this slot for?

There is a slot on the shiny black trim to the left of the drive stick. Anyone know if it is active and what purpose it serves? Sorry photo won't upload.

IIRC its a slot to allow you to unlock the transmission from the PARK position in an emergency - it should be covered in the handbook.

As above, it's the shift override, you pop the trim off and press the white lever below,  it allows you to put the car in Neutral without the car being turned on or powered in the event of a breakdown/accident

You stick a screwdriver in the slot to remove the cover.  Then you can access the mechanism to put the gear box in neutral and move the car if it wont power on.

Frosty, can you perhaps tweak the title slightly? 

Secondly, has anybody needed to do this? I think if the car is in a garage with a flat Battery it might be necessary to do this to push it out.

If it needs towing

they will often do it

in a case of an accident it may also be needed

Anyone know what happens with EPB if the Battery is flat/accident/tow needed etc.? Releasing the "transmission" would be part of the need? Is there a way to override the EPB if there is no power or does it have some sort of backup supply of its own?

My Renault Scenic from memory had a release in the boot (I could be wrong as it was 15 years ago!!!)

It will depend on the type of electric parking brake system fitted to the vehicle. 

 

Earlier systems its basically an electric motor that pulls on old fashioned handbrake cables connected to the rear callipers instead of a driver operating a handbrake lever.

These systems usually have an emergency mechanical over ride / release normally hidden behind a piece of trim - consult your owners manual.

 

Later systems have an individual electric motor bolted to the back of each rear brake calliper that apply the parking brake - these don't normally have an emergency over ride / release.

The corolla 2019 on uses caliper mounted motors for the EPB - you should be able to manually back them off

I asked as it stuck me it might be useful to carry the appropriate tool In the car.

The simple solution would be to have a jump pack, as the manual release is a bit complicated and require a service tool (powers the caliper  motors) 09756-48020

I guess you could also remove the motors and wind the gear mechanism manually? Admittedly, that would be a very tedious process, but possibly the only solution without a 12v supply of any kind?

Some motors do have a 5 mm hex on the back, but I'm not sure if that relates to the UK built cars it's only held by 2 bolts

In mine I'd have to disable the Engage-EPB-When-In-P function then shift it into P and switch off the car I think. If the car is dead there is no way to disengage them (Or engage them) without external power or specialist tools. One of the reasons I dislike them.
