Auris 1.4 d 4d manual diesel

Hey guys,

I have an Auris 1.4 diesel manual and it’s on 109k miles. It’s all been working spot on until recently when it was struggling with its gears.

initially for first and second it was fine, but then after going to third, it wouldn’t go back to second unless it had gone back into first gear first. Now it will not go into second gear at all when in motion- it will allow me to go into second ‘sometimes’ after going first gear first but only at stand still/parked.

Ive had a mechanic out to do a visual inspection (seen as our Toyota garage want to charge over £1650 just to disassemble and try find the issue). He can’t find any issue with the gear linkage, and is unsure as the gearbox mount is secured, and no other issues can be seen so reckons it is the gearbox. Anyone else have this issue? Sorry if it is already posted elsewhere.

Also, if I do have to change the gearbox, would I be able to use a 1.6 gearbox on a 1.4 engine- some forums are saying it would be alright, but want to get info regarding that.

thanks all for any help, it’s appreciated.

Tom.

If you about to change the gearbox make sure you buy one from exactly the same engine car. Can’t help with the issue but believe anyone on online forums and swapping gearboxes from one model to the other may end up costly. 👍

Couple of gearboxes on eBay. One is refurbished at £500 +£70 postage with 12 month guarantee, 6 units left. The other is £450 less 15% with coupon (which will expire soon), at 87500 miles. Del included.

Thanks for the reply.

so you’re saying you wouldn’t go up/down from a 1.4 gearbox, but only use the same 1.4? Is there a reason for that (like later issues/performance issues/etc), or is that just for trying to be safe?

Thanks as well @Catlover, seen a few on eBay going- noticed some from a Toyota Verso (not heard of that before), but it’s a D 4D 6 speed gearbox, so assuming all components should be the same?

clearly very new to sorting these things out, so honestly appreciating the info.

Putting on a gearbox from a different model may lead to

gearbox-engine fixings not the same.
maybe different clutch assembly.
possible different gear ratios
maybe speedo reading inaccurate

just some off top of my head

Yes, it has to be the same engine and same gearbox, they have codes and these codes should match. , otherwise as Joe said they will not work together or correctly.

@TonyHSD@Catloverreally appreciate the feedback, and guess the different gearboxes are off the table!

May I ask, do either of you have a hint to why it won’t go into gear whilst moving, but will do stationary- gear out of sync or something?

thanks again!

Hi,

It could be because of worn out synchromesh or clutch., old oil, something on the hydraulic ,. Master or slave cylinders, air locked., can be various reasons. You have to check the fluid first, then the clutch and then further, eventually take the transmission off the car , repair or swap with another one. Best to work with someone experienced who knows well this matter. 👍

When you say it was running fine….l didn’t it go wonky gradually or was it all of a sudden it went.? Any new noises? Has anything been touched at all? I feel there is a couple cables involved.  I thinking it is something mechanical in the box.
I had a 2010 Yaris 1.4 diesel with the 6 gear box. Loved the car. After me the wife had it for couple years, replacing her 59 plate 1.4 diesel but with a 5 gear box. Now we both Toyota hybrids.

Cheers Tony, I’ll try a few of those things and see if they help, if not then I’ll get someone involved to change the transmission. Thanks again!

@Catlover aye, pretty sudden. Had a while of it struggling to get back into second once passed it, but wasn’t an issue, but once it went, it’s not gone in properly since. It feels like something is completely restricting it from going in, like something is blocking its path. Linkage cables were checked, but they aren’t stretched or with any issues. Maybe the 5 gear is the way to go…

Cheers,

Tom

You get more economy from the 6 gears and a better drive.
The wife got her 5 gear Yaris before I got mine. When I was driving here I was always going to the gear stick for a 6th gear but of course there wasn’t one. I was so pleased that when I went to see the Yaris I bought that it had 6 gears, so much better, more relaxed drive and as I say better economy, perhaps 5mpg, about 8% better.
