Redline raspy screech sound

OK, so I would never intentionally redline my engine, but today I needed a fast acceleration to pull onto a highway around a bend. I think I took first gear all the way past the power peak around 5-6K RPM, and heard a sound with vibration that I'd never experienced before in my Auris. I would call it a stuttering, raspy screech. Car was behaving perfectly normally both before and after.

Anybody have any ideas? The motor is 1.33L Dual VVTI from 2009, the 1NR-FE one, with about 65K miles. Good running and regularly serviced.

The stuttering and vibration will be from hitting the rev limiter. It's basically a controlled misfire to prevent the engine from overspeeding to the point where it might destruct. It'll be fine, just try not to make a habit of it.

A rev limiter! Fantastic, thank you. I was really hoping it was a warning feature, rather than something like the timing chain chewing its way off the sprockets. But, I didn't recall ever reading about such a thing in the manual.

Rev limiter and possibly fuel cut if the ecu detected a knock - the vvti could have also been fully open, and shut quickly

Well, it is a warning, not to damage the engine.   Rev up to 5k is fine, but i would not force that engine over it.

I  remember once i was driving a car without fly by wire, was on a slope, was wet, tires started slipping, but ECU cant reduce throttle, so it was constantly locking up the wheels every 0.2 seconds or so, pretty nasty solution. Also sounded like engine is chewing itself up.

I remember the first time I hit the limiter in my Corolla TSport, it was hard acceleration in second and I just unintentionally hit the limit at 8200 rpm. It was a real brick wall limit on that engine. It sounded like a machine gun lol.

The 1.33 I have now is much much more civilised at the limit. I try to not intentionally go that high that it invokes the limiter but I have no qualms in getting very close to it if needs be.

As the miles have piled on (83k currently) and the known oil burning issue has got worse and worse (10 litres added in 11 months) I deliberately drive it hard on occasion in the hope it helps stop any fouling and also that it also gets the cat fully up to temperature. It drives as well if not better than ever and feels more responsive than in its early years.

It's not done on the throttle or the brakes, it just skips some of the fuel injection and ignition events and that's why you get that nasty on/off power delivery. The limiter protects the engine even when the drive is disengaged from the wheels (botched gearchanges etc).
