Hi tiny car friends (question thrown in for free)

Hey people. I've had a 107 for a few years and have ordered a 2012 Aygo that I collect in the week. I wanted one that had the bluetooth radio CD in it, but they seem to be like hen's teeth in the Aygo. So, there are loads of the bluetooth head units on eBay for the triplets - does anyone know if it's a straight swap? I'm not bothered about the USB port - it's the music streaming and calls that interest me. Also, is the mic integrated into the unit or do I have to get a mic and route it?

I know there are a million head units I could get, but not having an 'official' one and using an adapter will really make me itch - so here we are.

The below is what I'm on about if it helps.

what radio does the 2012 car have ? OEM mic is up by the interior light, you can pick the radios up for £30-45

Unless it is the base model car it should have bluetooth on a 2012

Cheers - it's the fire edition, so I guess they did a parts bin special on it. The radio I have is the radio cd with the aux port mounted on the radio itself and no bluetooth. It's identical to the one that was in my older 107.

Standard radio on a 2012 is 86120-0H010

the one with bluetooth and USB is 86120-YV010 (Pioneer DEH2028zc) 3 small buttons either side of the display, eBay prices £80-130

but these use a quad lock connector and a white fakra aerial connector, instead of the ISO connectors, so you will need adaptors what will be £15-25 on top

Aerial adaptor - CT27AA161

Quadlock adaptor - this one is a bit more tricky, you may have to make one

It needs a female quad lock to male ISO that's easy enough but you also need connector B for Aux and the mic 95% of what's available doesn't have them

https://connector.pinoutguide.com/40__16_12_12__pin_Head_Unit_Car_Stereo_Quadlock/

Most of the adaptors are designed to fit an aftermarket radio, not oem to oem - been down this road many a time and usually end up with a SOT lead and make what's needed from it, but it can get expensive

Halfords is very overpriced (no club discount on ICE)

Agree 100% with that.

I really can't see anyone arguing with that, and as for letting their staff work on your car.  Oh and before there is an outcry about me having ago at the staff, I am not, I worked there briefly and saw what the company regards as training.  I left not long after refusing to fit audio units to cars with the level of training I had been given, which I my case was none.

i have been around car audio and electronics a long time (think slide mount radios) i have fitted many a radio and a few full systems, with  cars getting more complex and more integrated it will become an even more niche market than it is now

I once see an employee get the job to change a headlight bulb in a Megane - i told him not to bother, then explained why - it's not a £4.99 job

Over the years I had privately upgraded many car audio systems and built a few systems for some of the kit cars I had built.  When Halford started doing audio fitment they sent managers away for training where they removed and changed a head unit on a a few of the popular Fords of the time.  When the team on the audio section were told to do it we all said no but then very one was leaned on and they reluctantly said yes with me being the only exception.  The manager was some what bewildered  and I tried to explain that removing the head unit for a run of the mill Ford, one which had been removed by other manages many times before was not sufficient training for taking apart someones pride and joy or a classic car / Merc that was only a few years old.  He then told me I had two choices to which I responded, no he had two choices, did he want me to resign then or hang on until he found a replacement.  Strangely I worked for a few months more but they put me on welcome duty and stacking shelves.  It suited me until I found another job.

They continued fitting audio unit but i think about once a month they had to send a car to the local automotive specialists to either do the work or repair what they had already done.

That was many years ago and Halfords could well have changed a great deal but seeing some of the horror stories on social media I do wonder.

I still don't think I would trust them to work on my pride and joy. I've heard too many horror stories

I remember watching a program where they had fitted roof racks to the car of a professional cyclist. She was on her way up North to a race when the roof racks detached and caused thousands of pounds worth of damage. Luckily she could prove to the Police that they were fitted that day by Halfords, otherwise she would have been done for causing an accident. If I remember correctly, one of the bikes she was carrying was around the £5000 mark. I wonder if Halfords offered her a replacement 😁

I remember that one, horrible experience for her and an expensive way to find out how competent the Halfords staff are.  Trouble is the staff on the shop floor are put in an unenviable position and it is really not their fault, even the store managers are under great pressure to make it happen at all costs.  The sad truth is that Halfords are not alone in putting staff under pressure and not training them, the difference with Halfords is that they are in a very different position to most.  If a phone supplier does the same the customer goes home with either the wrong phone or the wrong contract, sometimes both, but with Halfords they trash the car along the way.

Halfords actually carry insurance against poor workmanship by their technicians. I know this from a bad experience with a Halfords shop. They paid up and the store manager said “that’s why we have insurance”.

That is probably why they are so expensive, the insurance premiums are factored in the price of everything instore.  Bit worrying though in that the attitude appears to be that they can play with someone's pride and joy and if it all goes well they will rake in the profit and if the trash it, never mind that is what the insurance is for.   Says something about UK today when you can insure against gambling losses.
